Re: Health insurance.
I decided to go with Bupa. ....of course no-one knows how good there insurance company is until it comes to claiming
When nosy expats ask how can i live here without working, i reply, 'well, while you worked hard for 50 years, i worked smart for 5 years'
Re: Health insurance.
Isn't BUPA the only one the hospitals here will invoice directly? Meaning, that with others you pay the hospital first and then claim from your insurance carrier yourself. Pete

We're with AA, the guys I recommended. We didn't have any trouble with the insurance company, but the hospital were holding us until we'd pay by credit card, even though we'd already received all the necessary assurances from hospital and insurance company that things would be sorted directly between them.theprice01 wrote:I decided to go with Bupa. ....of course no-one knows how good there insurance company is until it comes to claiming
A quick phone call to Matt (one of the AA guys) and he sorted us, and we were allowed home. This phone call was at 8pm on a Sunday (not exactly office hours). That is the type of support I like.

I don't think I need to name and shame other than to say the hospital was in Hua Hin. They kept a nurse with my son until the matter had been resolved to make sure that he didn't escape. We had been warned by Matt that this might happen, which was why we made sure everything was in order between the hospital and the insurance the previous day.

Thailand based insurance companies (like Bupa Thailand, LMG, Thai Health, AXA Thailand etc.) in general work with contracted hospitals in Thailand. That they have contracts with hospitals does not mean that the hospital don't have to contact the insurance company before they start i.e. an operation or admit you to the hospital.
They will still have to inform the insurance company and ask for a Guarantee of Payment (GOP).
If you go to a not contracted hospital you will have to pay and claim back later.
The international Insurance Companies (like April, ACS, BDAE, Cigna, Bupa International etc.) usually offer you total freedom in your hospital choice and in general they pay the hospital directly (after the GOP process) when it gets more expensive (i.e. more than 24 hours hospitalization). So it works the same as with most Thai companies.
In all cases keep the limits of your coverage in mind in case you go to an expensive hospital. Many Thai Health Insurance plans have limits that are too low so you will find yourself paying a part of the bill also.

Re: Health insurance.
I am due to go under the knife for an operation on my back. I am in my mid-thirties and currently do not have insurance.
Is is possible to take out some health insurance and then get the insurance company to foot the bill over here?
It probably doesn't work that way but then again maybe it does, worth asking I suppose.
Thanks.

I think for obvious reasons, most insurers have clauses that require you to declare existing medical conditions which are then excluded from the cover.Henry 14th wrote:I am due to go under the knife for an operation on my back. I am in my mid-thirties and currently do not have insurance.

Yes common sense really. Health insurance companies are not charities.Dannie Boy wrote:I think for obvious reasons, most insurers have clauses that require you to declare existing medical conditions which are then excluded from the cover.Henry 14th wrote:I am due to go under the knife for an operation on my back. Cigna covers my family and me and they have been very good. My youngest son had minor surgery in Hua Hin the Cigna rep visited with a bag of goodies for him and on the day of discharge was there to take care of all the formalities.mat wrote:Thailand based insurance companies (like Bupa Thailand, LMG, Thai Health, AXA Thailand etc.) in general work with contracted hospitals in Thailand.
