I think this is spelling the word as it sounds, rather than the traditional spelling eg telefone rather than telephone

 Just been checking it out - totally wrong
Its learning the sounds of each letter, and building up a whole word using the combined sounds.

The blogspot link is great. Been doing that myself for 5 years in Northeast Thailand

Can't seem to post any comments on the site as it all comes up in Thai

Any ideas?

How about looking at the HHAD media kit if you want to advertise your business:

Phonics does not seem to help with spelling the English language !

Nor with grammar, it seems. The usage of English in the paragraph you quoted Red Dwarf (& the original OP), is embarrassingly bad for an English teaching programme. Something tells me my littl'un will be continuing to learn from me...

phonics
Reading method involving letter recognition: a method of teaching reading in which people learn to associate letters with the speech sounds they represent, rather than learning to recognize the whole word as a unit

phonetics

2. sound system of a language: the system or pattern of speech sounds used in a particular language
