This just occurred to me...
maybe you could have said in Thai with a big smile, ''kao jai kap koon ka"
"I get it, thank you very much''
I think the message would be conveyed but without puublic loss of face.

I find that the Thai in my village do use words like OAN AND PUMPI that mean fat and other words . These to them mean nothing when they use them to call you its not rood in their way of thinking , when you consider the nick names some have like , mue = pig and pet = duck and there are many others . So if someone says some thing i would not bother yourself over it as its just their way and so different from the western way of life .
I have been insulted moor on forums by supposed intelligent people.
