Where pray-tell to they suggest they report to?

Is the police station prepared for the hundreds of Thais and farangs that own Hua Hin rental properties to converge en-mass tomorrow?

Or is this another job for the already overloaded immigration office?

Just ask them if they’re[Mod Edit] Appraise yourself of the forum's racism policy. Such comments can not be tolerated.

This has always been the case. They are just repeating the law now in the media. Hotels do this automatically when you check in. It is illegal to house a foreign person without notifying immigration. I at not saying Thais follow the law.

The first and major line of defence against terrorists or any other unwanted alien is border control and immigration. We have seen time after time how easy it appears to be to enter Thailand, providing that you are prepared to oil the wheels or contribute to the tea fund.

This current edict is a knee-jerk reaction because the first line of defence has clearly failed!

There is nothing new in hotels collecting passport details for reporting purposes. I see nothing wrong with the updated/reinforced current laws requiring registration for rented accommodation as it fills a gaping hole in an already leaking colander.

Providing that the registration process is simple (Mmm) and the necessary staff are used to implement yet another crackdown (Mmm), I really don't see the issue for long term foreign residents.

I leave and enter the country more than most, as a function of my job. I religiously fill in the arrival card with my address on every occasion but....no one ever checks that this is actually where I'm staying! There are supposedly approx 25 Million arrivals annually...how big would the immegration department need to be to check the abode of every visitor?

It doesn't have a form number on it in English but my wife tells me it's TM30 and headed
"Notification form for House Master, owner or the possessor of the residence where Alien has stayed" -available from and to be handed into immigration.

This has been the case for years although not strictly enforced.

From Immigration's website:

"He/She (The owner of the residence) must notify (by the Form TM.30) to the competent official Of the Immigration Office located in the same area of that house/residence within 24 hours from the time of arrival of the alien. However, such notification could be made in person or by an agent or sent with completed Form( TM.30) by registered post."

I guess they try to make sure there's one in every immigration office. :D That's probably the person who sits in the back and gives final approval to all the paperwork. :roll:

I think Thais are confused by the definite and indefinite article as there's no such things in Thai so translations tend to be confused. The other day in Big C I saw that the Mr Donut coffee machine was out of order. A sign said "a coffee machine" not working. So what about another one? Anyway, off topic.

Here in the hotel where I work in Phuket I forward all passport details of all non-Thai guests every day to immigration. Can be done online. There are of course no daily checks. Would be completely useless in the first place, but - in theory - it should make life more difficult for people on the run. When a name/passport number of a wanted person is entered an alarm should go off.

Have not heard of any visits to hotels although it should be easy for immigration to figure out which hotels are and which are not reporting. It might be that non-reporting hotels ARE visited and things are 'sorted'. Many hotels do not wish to report as they are afraid that one day the data might end op at the tax office.

I have heard rumours of a 20,000 Baht fine per non-registered guest. Not because immigration come checking in the hotel but tourists who get involved with the police in any way or are for instance hospitalized are asked where they stay. Then immigration checks if the hotel has reported this person.

In theory they could also easily check whether the landlords of 90-day reporters who rent have reported their tenants.
