Two speedboats crash off Samui, 1 dead
Two speedboats collided on Monday night near Koh Samui island, killing one person and injuring two others.

They crashed about one nautical mile off Bo Phut in Koh Samui district. It was reported to local police about 8.30pm, Pol Lt Sirachat Kamunee, officer on duty at Bo Phut police station, said on Tuesday.

The Chor Chokchanita 22, a speedboat operated by Funnyday Co, and the Bangkok Samui 2, owned by Bangkok Samui Hospital, were travelling in opposite directions, he said.

Two hospital employees aboard the Bangkok Samui 2 were injured - Kriengkai Somboonying and Waruwa Artwichai. The driver of the Chor Chokchanita 22, Sutthikiat Samthong, was also hurt.

Pol Lt Sirachat said the three injured people were taken to Bangkok Samui Hospital, where Kriengkai later died.

Kriengkrai was on the staff of Phangan International Hospital, a branch of Bangkok Samui Hospital. Ms Waruna is a nurse at the hospital.

The duty officer said the collision occurred when the Chor Chokchanita 22 was returning to Koh Samui after taking tourists to Rin beach on Koh Phangan for the full-moon party. The hospital speedboat was cruising towards its base on Koh Phanang after delivering a patient to Bangkok Samui Hospital.

No surprise. Being around the eastern seaboard for a long time all the speed boat services are driven by late teen/early 20's who I think get paid by the trip. The faster the better. Just picture a motorcycle on the water being in driven by those guys. There seems to be some kind of similar incident in Pattaya bay weekly.

I occasionally have a look at this resource but found it is becoming more limited and is now just a feed from the Bangkok Post and Pattaya News with the odd repeat of a Thai PBS story. Shame they don't include many more sources as I don't find it very useful any longer. Still get most of my news through RSS feeds.

They still list 9 News feeds on the drop down tab at the top. Occasionally I see stories from PBS and The Enquirer, but not as many as before.

Its taken them 50 years to fix and expand a road ... not a chance with railway tunnels.

Dust shuts Thailand's longest train tunnel just after opening
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) closed Thailand's longest train tunnel just after opening it on Sunday pending a 14-day clean-up after passengers complained of thick dust inside it.

Ekarat Sri-arayanpong, chief of the SRT governor’s office, said that northeast-bound passengers complained about thick dust when their train passed through the Pha Sadet tunnel in Saraburi province, so the SRT ordered the contractor to clean the tunnel within 14 days.

The new 5.4-kilometre-long tunnel – a part of the SRT’s new double-track railway to the Northeast – opened on Sunday. The SRT plans to reopen it on Aug 12.

....."The old section is 18 kilometres long and a train takes 32 minutes to cover the distance.

Using the tunnel, the new route between Map Krabao and Muak Lek is 14km long and takes 15 minutes."....

Was it really worth the cost, time, effort and ongoing maintenance for such a small benefit? Someone's pockets got stuffed with this one.

For a country with high speed rail aspirations, both routes seem extremely slow moving.
