Drug abuse in thailand (Arrests/News)
I'm surprised there's not a thread on this yet given the rampant drug use in Thailand. There's been some VERY large hauls of drugs confiscated in recent weeks. A few lesser ones of recent are...

A PRIVY councillor suggested yesterday that the government take a medical approach toward tackling drug problems instead of resorting to criminal proceedings.
“Putting drug abusers behind bars does not mean they can give up drugs,” General Paiboon Koomchaya, who served as justice minister before being appointed to the Privy Council in late 2016, said at a seminar yesterday. Organised by HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha’s Projects Office, the seminar addressed drugs-related issues in a bid to encourage relevant parties to explore solutions from lessons learnt from the past. Paiboon said more than 220,000 people in Thailand had been put behind bars for drugs-related offences.
“We have to look for ways to take these people out of jail and help them contribute constructively to their families and society,” he said. According to Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister ACM Prajin Juntong, the number of inmates in Thailand hovered at around 6,000 six decades ago, jumped to 75,000 in 1977, before reaching the overwhelming number of 356,000 at present. “Thailand is ranked 6th in the world when it comes to the number of inmates,” Prajin pointed out.

Foreigners are dumb as a box of rocks to dabble in drugs here. You ain't in Kansas Dorothy. This is how they can take down dealers.

If any reminder is needed to avoid drugs and prison in Thailand, watch the recent movie A Prayer Before Dawn, true story of young British boxer behind bars for dealing in Thailand...brutal but compelling
Re: Drug abuse in thailand (Arrests/News)
That's because other countries don't fill their jails with drug abusers.“Thailand is ranked 6th in the world when it comes to the number of inmates,”
I agree there are a lot of arrests but the drugs recovered are a drop in the ocean.
Did anyone notice in that vid that at one point the keystone cops were shooting from opposite positions. It's a wonder they didn't kill one of their own!

A few arrested totaling 11 million yaba pills (1 billion baht street sale) plus 700 kilos of ice methamphetamine (1 gram sells on street for 3000 baht - u do the math )

One thing I noticed was that although they may have been shouting in Thai “armed police” or whatever, they didn’t look any different than the guys they were trying to apprehend, so they might have thought it was a rival gang after their drugsHHTel wrote: ↑Fri Aug 10, 2018 8:04 amThat's because other countries don't fill their jails with drug abusers.“Thailand is ranked 6th in the world when it comes to the number of inmates,”

In Hua Hin the undercover cops look the same. Once saw them doing a drug bust on the beach...they do blend in very well!

Samut Sakhon pub raided, 123 test positive for drugs
123 high on drugs in one club. Ouch! Like I said, drug use is rampant here!
Officials from the Provincial Administration Department joined forces with other agencies to raid a pub in Samut Sakhon and found 123 pub goers tested positive to drug use.
Piriya said an undercover official from his division was first sent to check the pub after the authorities received tips that drugs were being sold on the premises and the 1am closing hour was often ignored. Piriya said the undercover official stayed inside until 1.30am before signalling waiting officials to raid.
They found about 800 patrons were still dancing. Patrons were rounded up for urine tests and 123 of them tested positive for drug use, 43 of them women.

Not really recreational drugs this one, though they are abused and used in the same way, but pharmaceutical. Highlights the often willy-nilly giving of benzodiazepine class tablets in Thailand (valium, xanax etc). Thailand took a step forward when they stopped selling, in most places, this type of tablet over the counter (I use them on occasion but agree they shouldn't be easily handed over). Evidently, there are places you can get 50,000 at a time here.
Jail for man who smuggled almost 50,000 tablets into Manchester from Thailand
Anthony Rekia, of Bury New Road, was stopped by Border Force officers at Manchester Airport on August 15 last year.
The 46-year-old told officers he was carrying 600 cigarettes, however, a search of his luggage revealed a holdall within a suitcase containing three different types of pills.
Testing later showed the holdall contained 40,000 Diazepam tablets, also known as Valium; 8,000 Alprazolam tablets, also known as Xanax; and 1,890 Clonazepam tablets, used to treat seizures and panic disorders.

Big one this..
Farang Laces his own Tom Yum with Weed
KOH SAMUI — A British businessman on Koh Samui ran foul of the law Wednesday for innovating in the kitchen by adding cannabis to his tom yum goong.
Gary Coughlan, 58, was arrested and charged with drug offenses this morning after policemen noticed he was acting erratically, police told reporters. They said he tested positive for drug use.
Police said Coughlan, a real estate developer who has been living on Koh Samui for 22 years, confessed to eating the spicy shrimp curry infused with marijuana prior to his arrest, citing its benefits for good sleep. He said a Thai friend provided the substance.
Although the interim parliament recently passed a law legalizing medical marijuana, unsanctioned use of the plant remains illegal. Violators face jail time of up to a year...
