Western media have even picked up this story ... Thailand famous once again for all the wrong reasons ...

Deluge of electronic waste turning Thailand into 'world's rubbish dump'
At a deserted factory outside Bangkok, skyscrapers made from vast blocks of crushed printers, Xbox components and TVs tower over black rivers of smashed-up computer screens.

This is a tiny fraction of the estimated 50m tonnes of electronic waste created just in the EU every year, a tide of toxic rubbish that is flooding into south-east Asia from the EU, US and Japan.

Thailand, with its lax environmental laws, has become a dumping ground for this e-waste over the past six months, but authorities are clamping down, fearful that the country will become the “rubbish dump of the world”. The global implications could be enormous.

Govt to ban import of electronic, plastic wastes
IMPORT OF all kinds of electronic and plastic wastes will be prohibited to ensure protection of the environment. A meeting yesterday between all related agencies to solve the environmental problems created by e-waste and plastic waste concluded with a resolution to ban the import of hazardous used wastes into the country.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister General Surasak Kanchanarat emphasised that the environment and public health must come before profit-making and industrial development.

As per the resolution, the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry decided to ban the import of 411 kinds of e-waste. The import of plastic wastes will be totally banned in the next two years.

Came across this article how Singapore handles it's waste. So sensible and safe disposal is possible. Of course, if anyone will get it right for the environment, then Singapore will.

AS WORLD’S TRASH FLOODS THAILAND, ACTIVISTS CALL FOR WASTE IMPORT BAN
Thailand and its Southeast Asian neighbors are becoming major dumping grounds for the world’s plastic garbage and electronic waste. Environmentalists now want to see a ban on waste imports imposed across ASEAN.

Environmentalists from Greenpeace Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines gathered at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand on Tuesday to discuss the sharp rise in waste imports seen by the three countries after China banned plastic and electronic waste imports in 2017.

According to Greenpeace Southeast Asia, imports of plastic waste to Thailand jumped from 152,244 tons in 2017 to 481,381 tons in 2018. Last year, Japan was the biggest exporter of plastic garbage to the Kingdom at 173,371 tons, followed by Hong Kong at 99,932 tons and the United States at 84,462 tons.

But in Southeast Asia, Thailand accounts for only the third largest share of plastic waste imports, after Vietnam and Malaysia. Malaysia took in 872,797 tons of plastic waste last year (up from 549,876 tons in 2017) out of total global imports of 8.35 million tons.

Waste plastic imports 'to be banned'

Authorities plan to ban the import of all electronic and plastic waste next year, in a move to improve garbage management.

The ban was announced by a new subcommittee on the two garbage types, led by National Resources and Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa, who yesterday said he was determined to achieve the goal.

"We will ban all imports," Mr Varawut said after the group's first meeting on Wednesday.

However, the minister admitted it will be an uphill task since the drastic measure requires amending the law.

His 29-member subcommittee works under the National Environment Board, chaired by deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon. Among items topping the subcommittee's agenda is a review of the import quotas for electronic and plastic waste.

Mr Varawut said his group will start by taking a close look at the current import and export of plastic garbage.

"We are considering whether to offset the imports against exports," he said.

I keep seeing statements like this, and not only in Thailand. It's a big problem, so why are they letting it continue for a year :?

An update to this very old post. We had a new fridge delivered yesterday. That left us with an old fridge to dispose of. Mrs BB phoned the above number at 11:30 this morning, and it was gone by 3:35 this afternoon. Mrs BB received 500฿ for her trouble.
