just saw flash on twitter that facebook is down.

there may be some Thai's you know starting to panic.

Twitter and Facebook can disappear down the toilet for all I care. The most socially and personally destructive thing created in the last 20 years.

Mercedes may well sell envy.........but social media like Facebook and Twitter sell vanity and narcissism which is slowly corrosive to the individual and to society. When you look at these sites it's truely unreal how up their own backsides so many people are.

I could go on....have pages worth of stuff on this one.

I know Facebook carries a hell of a lot of dross, and I'm not trying to defend it, but from a personal point of view, I think its worth wading through all of the dross to benefit from the ability to communicate with friends and family located all over the world.

I feel without it, I would have lost contact with many.

Yes, it can be annoying, but I'd personally be worse off without it, or something similar.

If I want to communicate with friends or family I find it quite easy to e-mail or, even use that old fashioned contraption, the telephone. Mrs A is on facebook and she keeps me updated with some friends putting their washing in the machine or having a ham sandwich for lunch, truly riveting stuff.

Yes, I'm not disagreeing - people (probably myself included) post some mind numbing stuff. However, I pride myself that I have the ability to ignore the crap. You can't imagine how many Welshmen I had to ignore when they found it necessary to let me know the rugby score last week

I'll never have good luck because I don't re-post crap within 5 seconds, I never accept invitations to play games, etc., etc. However, if I'm bored I might take part in an online quiz, and if I do well, I might let the world know how clever I am

Likewise, I receive a hell of a lot of crap via e-mail and the telephone (smart phone) - I'm able to ignore that as well - I must be truly gifted

Facebook is a narcissistic scourge populated by those with an over elevated sense of self importance. Sadly it has also become a haven for freeloaders and spammers that are too tight to professionally market their business.

If I see another post about a cat/dog, someone's meal, or some idiot trying to sell or rent real estate in Hua Hin I will go spare.

Good riddance if the thing ever gets shut down.

I understand all of the objections and agree with most of them, but I've had no problems with FB. I use it to keep tabs on in touch with my adult kids. Loads of videos and photos that aren't practical by email. I probably only log on once a week or so, and reject 'friend' requests from my students and assorted Thai acquaintances of Mrs D-M.

I don't see any of the above because I don't look for them.

I usually log on in the morning while drinking my coffee. Lot's of my clients, and old school friends, on it so I do see some posts that I enjoy. But 95% I cursor past without wasting any time on them.

While I enjoy some as mentioned, it wouldn't bother me if it disappeared
