Mirabelle French deli on Soi 94

Post by Thriftydrifter »

I can't believe I 've only just stumbled across this place, only 10 minutes walk from home, 2 weeks before we leave Hua Hin - it has the best (French) cheese porn I've seen since Singapore, and it's not unreasonably priced, eg brie B900/kg (Brie de Meaux is more but even the ordinary is nicely squidgy and tasty). Also got some nice little individual quiches for B80 (spinach & smoked salmon, blue cheese & mushroom and there were a couple of others, and good rustic (sourdough) baguette. Plan on going back to sample the patisserie and the pate....and maybe the duck with olives (to take away and reheat, or I guess eat in)...and they do galettes. And they're open for breakfast...

On reflection, perhaps it's just as well I didn't find it sooner!

Never has any customers although now you say it has French cheese porn I'm sure a few lurkers will be interested.

It will be closed by the time you return as it is obviously running at a loss the same as the Italian next door.

Sorry to appear harsh Ste860 but I live close by and 95% of the times I leave my house I go past Mirabelle and 95% of the times I go past it is empty. Simple economics, I'm not sure how it survives. The same as Olivio ? in the same block, in high season when the restaurants further up the soi, Eat at Hua Hin, Restaurant 94 etc were reasonably full, Olivio didn't have enough customers to form a hand at bridge.

A 17 baht advertorial here would certainly help.

I know Olivis is closed Ste860, that's my point, it couldn't survive on a few customers.

I will take a closer look at what's on offer in Mirabelle next time I go past but I have perused the small menu posted outside and I do recall one item that included a bottle of wine and it was well over 1,000 Baht. I don't spend that much on a meal very often but when I do it won't be in a small shophouse on a busy street and I am sure I am not alone in thinking that.

To be fair (and I don't know the place), most restaurants will charge you c. 1k baht and up for a bottle of wine alone, never mind the food!
That's why I'm happy to stick to Chang unless someone else is paying...

It seems a shame, but I guess not surprising. I only found it by a Facebook ad of all things, and when I got there I wasn't sure it was open as I couldn't really see inside very well from the pavement. In Europe shop doors are often ooen and it's more if an invitation to enter - with aircon you can't have the door open, and the place does look more expensive than it actually is. I had walked by a couple of times on the other side of the road and never even noticed it.

If he wants to survive he needs to make some effort with publicity I think, both on the existence of the place and the prices - publicise special offers, leaflet the nearby hotels and condos, hold cheese & wine tasting events, have a monthly French Evening with music (even if it's on CD!) and flags etc. Local papers are usually desperate for content and will often provide free publicity. A passion for food isn't enough to run a successful food business, you have to do the business stuff.

The French boucherie (soi 90?) seems to be surviving well enough. I haven't been there myself for ages, but Mrs D-M is a regular customer for a burger, steak or a really nice joint of pork to roast.

I do hope that places like this find a way to get by, as they add to the quality options available.

Well this free publicity won't do them any harm - how long before someone asks where is it ?

I presume it's on the Soi 94 map, but go up Soi 94, over the railway, past Sakura etc and it's in the block of shop houses on the left before the gym, Lucianos and the crossroads.

( If you go give me a ring as I'm a 5 minute walk away)
