Re: Fish and Chips
At the Lodge - we use fresh Red Snapper that Mrs. T gets from her buddy in the wet market - to order.
To avoid getting in to debates about batter - we cook the fish in Tempura flour - and bloody nice it is too.............

Yep, Red Snapper is good for F & C, and yes, tempura batter is very nice as well, although if I'm honest, I should say that I generally just make my own beer batter which I then use for a few other odds and ends as well.

The two are not mutually exclusive.
You can make tempura batter using soda water to make it light and airy and beer - it works very well.

It's difficult enough to find anywhere that does chips and not french fries let alone a decent white fish fillet.

Big Boy, you must be feeling proud--best chippie of the year in Plymouth, have you tasted their F & C?
Re: Fish and Chips
I wasn't, but no, I don't think they existed in my day.

Had fish and chips tonight at May's Kitchen. Near Marwin Pool Villas on the road off Pala u Road towards the new immigration building. It is in the row of shophouses before the one next to Marwin Villas. Mushy peas, nice crispy batter and good fish. The owner is from Manchester so you could have traditional gravy with your chips and also has Chinese chip shop curry sauce. 189 baht well spent. They also do 99 baht breakfasts,( along with lots of other things ) I noticed but haven't tried them so can't comment.
Re: Fish and Chips
One visited with one's friends May's Kitchen the other night. Both Vindaloo and F&C were really, really good. One means really good! The price was better than good, staff very friendly and the place nice and clean.
One shall visit there soon again.

Re: Fish and Chips
I've just returned from May's. My mother and I went specifically for the fish and chips based on many recommendations. I couldn't find fault which was a little disappointing (we all like a good moan). I agree 100% with the previous posters. The Fish and Chips were all they were said to be including mushy peas. Even a choice of vinegar, Sarson's or Heinz!!! Home made tartar sauce etc etc. The batter was really crispy and a good meaty fish. My mother purports to be a connoisseur and after spending 3 months a year for the past 20 years here, she's put this at the top of her list.
Can't comment on the other food but I will try their indian dishes the next time I'm there.
Thoroughly recommend a visit.

Re: Fish and Chips
For those who miss their cod fix, such as myself, I've just arrived back home from Makro (by soi 6) and can report that they currently have frozen cod fillets is stock.
I think each pack is about 1kg (5 or 6 fillets) and costs 150 baht per pack. I grabbed 3 packs and noticed a few other people getting stuck in so if you're interested then I would recommend getting some before it's all gone. You'll find it in one of the freezers, facing the bakery goods, in the same freezer as some of the pangasius fillets.

Re: Fish and Chips
150 Baht per pack sounds ridiculously cheap. A pack with 2 small/medium size fillets, enough for 2 meals is 400+ in Villa and HHH&B.

Makro stock cod fillets all the time. I've been getting it for the past 12 months.

Thanks for the tip Takiap, just grab 2 pack, still have some in the freezer.
Re: Fish and Chips
I have honestly never seen cod at Makro before. I have no idea how I missed it because I usually have a pretty good idea of what they stock and what they don't, and also where everything is located.
Yeah I know, I obviously spend too much time walking around the place looking at everything. They had frozen haddock a while back as well but I've not seen it since.
