Recording Internet Tv on Computer

Post by Davy B »

Now that I have mastered iLikeHDTv - it took a while - I now have a technical question that hopefully someone can answer for me. I have found that now I am getting older I am unable to stay awake long enough to watch some television programmes that I get from the UK because of the time difference. I have a computer, external hard drives and USB memory sticks, DVD recorders (brought from the UK), scart leads and phono leads and every conceivable thing I can think of, but I cannot seem to be able to record anything onto any device. Using Media Player via My Computer states that I do not have the function to use the EPG or Programme Timer so that avenue of recording is shut. I am not talking solely here about catch-up tv where I can watch it in the morning - ilikehdtv doesn't have the facility to do this as yet anyway - I am talking about recording it permanently. I was doing this all the time in the UK but it is not something Thais seem to do. I have had some puzzled looks when enquiring - not for the first time!! Sometimes all I want to do is press the One Touch Record button on the DVD Recorder and go to bed at a reasonable hour but even this is totally beyond me.

If anyone has any suggestions - clean ones only - on how I can set things up please let me know!!!

Not sure if it's available on the international packages or what channels but I likehd has started providing catch up on the beta site. You login to beta.Ilikehd

^^ beta.ilikehd.com.

Not sure how you would capture the live stream easily on a PC.

Thanks for that hhinner. I am in regular contact with ilikeHDtv - technical questions rather than nuisance calls - and they advised me that catch-up was on their agenda but they were building up their clientele first before increasing the options available. Since then of course they have had to source most of the channels available after the demise of CTH. I must admit it is getting better. The capturing of the live stream onto whatever is my main problem though and the search continues .......

Your computer won't natively connect to any of your VCR equipment as they use different signals and ways of transferring data (something known as a 'codec'). For relatively little money - sub £30 - you can get yourself a USB device that plugs-in to your PC with fly-leads that connect to your VCR or DVR. https://goo.gl/images/z2VSMt

The computer treats this as another monitor and the VCR thinks it is connected to a TV. There are no fancy EPGs but you said that was not a problem. I have no idea if these are sold in Thailand but can't imagine that they're not.

Thanks J.J.B for the info. My wife has a membership for Lazada. Can you tell me if this is the same thing and what are chances it will actually work and I will order one from them.

When I said no easy ways to record streams on your PC, it turns out I was wrong (again!). I had a look for such things using Google and there are paid software solutions. This one has a demo mode which you can try free and I was able to record some clips from Ilikehd: http://applian.com/replay-media-catcher/. US$50. There are others.

I had a look on Google aswell and came across some Freeware but when reading through some of the links the words ''record from television'' does not appear and when television is mentioned it means ''selected tv shows'', so recording the Man United game tonight does not fall into this category. I am quite reluctant to spend a king's ransom for something that I am not convinced will do exactly what I want it to do. I just cannot believe that there is no easy solution to this!!!

You got it, Davy B, pretty much any of those will do the trick. Some of them may require the installation of software to enable 'capture' (what techies call getting video from one device to another) but that is probably to get the USB device working properly rather than limiting you to one program. For the money they cost, it's worth a try.

I asked the question of recording to iLikeHDtv and not surprisingly they said that they have a device called a StreamBox that records ANY tv channel off iLike HDtv - but the android box, because that is exactly what it is, costs about $300 (per Google) but can be paid along with your monthly or yearly subscriptions. Not surprisingly it has put me right off the idea. However, I was also told by a techie friend in the UK that there has to be a way to do it without it costing a small fortune and they will look into it for me. As regards any additional software that will be needed, hhinner mentioned on an earlier reply a ''replay media catcher' costing about $50. Again, Googling it, I found freeware in the form of an 'Online Media Recorder'' but again I am not sure it will do what I want it to do. I am getting confused and a few deep breaths are now required.....
