What I am saying is that problems are not normally caused by a new version of Windows. They are caused by an incorrect installation process or tweaks that have been made to the computer for various reasons or unwanted programs that people have installed without realizing that they are doing it. These are all problems which will occur if they install the first version of Windows 10 or wait and install the 10th version. The problems are not normally with Microsoft software but with the person or the PC.
I guess we have to agree to disagree. I think its quite easy to install Windows, usually pop in the CD and follow the prompts which a Grandmother can do. Unless you plan on some partitioning which can begin to get complicated such as a dual boot system, I have both OSX and Windows 7 installed on my Macbook Pro, but most people don't do that.

My advice is still the same, don't upgrade your version of Windows just because you can, especially if you have a perfectly fine working system at the moment, until the first "stable" version comes out with fixes and patches, usually known as SP1 (Service Pack 1), sit on the sidelines and watch everyone else go through the headaches and hassles that are inevitable...

Sidenote - here are two awesome moments in Windows product release history. Bill Gates will never live the first one down...

Just want to say that so far I'm impressed. I got the downloaded install files within 24 hours of release on my new(ish) ultrabook. I was going to wait for a while to let them get the bugs out, but for some reason it kept trying to install every time I turned the laptop on and I had to cancel it each time, so I finally decided to go ahead with the install and it took all of 15 minutes and came up perfectly with all my applications, programs, files, and settings from Windows 8.1 in tact (except for application default settings). I've been using it for a day now exclusively and everything works perfectly. I love the new (non touch) interface as it is very intuitive. All my hardware seems to work including the wifi network printer and I haven't had to fiddle with any settings so far other than the afore mentioned defaults. I hope it keeps running cleanly. It may just change my opinion of Microsoft! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Almost all the important "how to" links I've posted are contained in the following article, so this is kind of an "everything you need to know" one stop shop...

On Saturday I had still not received a notification from Microsoft that I could upgrade to Windows 10 so I decided to do it anyway. I downloaded the upgrade from the Microsoft site (it seems to be freely available) and ran it. The download took about 25 minutes. The upgrade took about 90 minutes (no trouble whatsoever). I was surprised with the result as everything was the same as before the upgrade. My desktop hardly changed, it looked exactly the same as I had it set up in Windows 8.1 (the old Windows 95 way). I tested all the programs and they all worked perfectly (settings, passwords, etc. had all been moved to Windows 10). All my hardware works perfectly so all the drivers have been correctly updated. The only problem I had was with BitDefender. Because the current version is not compatible with Windows 10 the program is disabled during the upgrade. About 3 hours after the upgrade Windows produces a message with a link to download a new compatible version of BitDefender. I had already downloaded this earlier. Later I noticed that internet wasn't working on my Windows 10 computer but still working on my tablets, etc. After googling the problem I decided that the responsibility had to lie with BitDefender. I looked in the settings and found that the new version was only allowing one computer to use internet at one time. I changed this setting and everything was OK. All in all my opinion of the upgrade is very positive. But, if asked the question "Do you need Windows 10?". The answer would probably be No as it doesn't really offer anything new.

Less than a week after the W10 first installs started - surely the jury must still be out re: how good or bad it is?

The early adopters presumably believe all the usual MS hype that W10 will be the greatest OS of all time?!

P.S. Yesterday I read that W10 harvests loads of info which MS then sells to advertisers who can then bombard you with ads. You can opt out, but you have to visit about 10 different screens apparently!

I don't remember MS telling us about that in advance! Same s**t - diferent day + different OS!

I think Microsoft abandoned the "Service Pack" model some time ago, I don't remember exactly when but it was around the time I retired from the IT industry several years ago. Instead of Service Packs, they now routinely send out updates and patches automatically. I could be wrong, but I'd research it if I was you before I'd wait very long for a "Service Pack" that might never be coming.

Service Packs were still used in Windows 7. All they were were a collection of updates rolled into a single package for convenience anyway; they pretty much lost relevance as the world became more connected. I think you're right though; the model is apparently being abandoned for Windows 10.

I'm going on a 10 day road trip later this week starting in a California beach town and ending in a Florida beach town and will take the new laptop with Windows 10 installed with me, so I wont be able to rely on my Windows 7 netbook or my Ubuntu desktop. For a week and a half I will be exclusively using Windows 10. That should be a good test of whether it can do everything I need or not.

I'll let you know...

FWIW Win 7 SP1 was the last. No service packs for Win 8 or 8.1.

Back from the road trip and I have to say that so far I love Windows 10 and have had no problems with it at all. That new OS combined with the power and speed of my new(ish) Dell ultabook gave me a great travelling computer. Gone were the waits on pages to load that I had on hotel wifi networks with my netbook, and Windows 10 is so intuitive that I keep waiting on the negative of upgrading but so far I couldn't be happier. Fingers crossed!
