No problem at all. I use a little place in Chom Sin Road just east of the Nebkerhardt traffic signals on the North side of the road. Lady in there speaks good English and will do everything you need. Starter pack costs about 400 baht for which you get a SIM card, number and some pre-paid credit. 12Call is probably best in this area.

A sim card is a universal size? I'll need a new cellphone as the one I have now doesn't use a sim card. I can get a sim-requiring cellphone here for about $150 (4350B), or can I get one cheaper there?

You can get a taksin-made playphone for 1990 Baht, or a Nokia 1100 for 2990 Baht. There are basicly two things you can do with these phones: Call and send SMS. Think cellphones are generally cheaper in Thailand than in NZ. Especially if you buy a brand from Asia.

Yes, you can get coverage by Orange in HH.
Just check the lifetime for the Orange sim card when you don't use it while staying in UK.
The coverage of Orange is not as good in remote areas as 1-2 Call.

(1-2 Call lasts 1 year if you don't use your sim).

Orange coverage is very weak, sometimes on an evening i cannot get a line at all. 12Call is better but the calls are quite expensive compared to Orange.
