I'm sure I'm not the only one that struggles with all the jargon used on this site by the mod's and other's in the know, but is there any chance of a brief lexicon (I looked that one up) for the rest of us?
I know I should know what Trolls and spammers are, but I don't. It would just help to follow what's happening sometimes (see the 1999 thread in Foo).
If this is already available elsewhere, please be kind when pointing this out!!

After inadvertently viewing some naughty sites (I was actually looking for hotels in Singapore and Hong Kong, 'onest guv) the other night and now am being pestered continuously with Pop ups and sometimes pages being displayed in my browser that I have not requested. They are not always but usually sex related.
Anybody know of any way to stop them without me having to give my credit card number over the internet.

Trash Internet Explorer and get yourself a decent browser that blocks pop-ups and the like. I'd suggest Firefox as the best around at the moment. I believe you can transfer all your bookmarks from IE or whatever other browser you are using.
It's Mozilla.org and download Firefox for free from there. Even I could do it months ago.
As Wunderlust says, it's far superior to IE and I was able to transfer all my "favourites" and confirm passwords again.
Guess - you've had some replies - but just blocking popups may not be the full answer.
I use IE 6 and Firefox - both have their strenghts and weaknesses, but IE does have more security problems.
Have you tried to find the cause of the popup problem, which is most likely to be spyware (or adware). Most people are aware of anti-virus products, but you may want to consider installing some 'freeware' anti spyware stuff.
Spysweeper.
Just start it when you boot you PC, or at any time, then close it. It will intercept (hopefully) any problems. Don’t forget to load updates regularly then follow the instructions.
SpyBot
This has a sweep function. The menu (LH) should have 4 grey tabs, the top one is Spybot S&D. This tab contains options to Search and Destroy, Recover, Immunise and Update.
Make sure that your definitions are up to date using the Update function (Update tab and then top left within opened window). When updates are downloaded and applied you need to 'Immunise'.
Click on Immunise tab (left) then 'Immunise' again within the opened tab (top left).
Recovery is self explanatory and would only be needed if you delete something incorrectly. It always creates a backup point prior to getting rid of spyware.
To run a scan, click on the Spybot tab and then the button at the top left, within the opened window 'Check for problems'. It most certainly will scan.
To get rid of any spyware found, follow the instructions carefully. There is a tutorial and help function supplied.
