Oh dear  It's going from bad to worse
I think the author is talking about the paper symbol in a circle (looks like a bell :? ) which refers to unread posts?? Not the chillies! Correct me if I am wrong :P Maybe a Mod can rectify this....poor Khmer is going to get even more confused!

Siani may have hit it. The shaking bell means you haven't read new posts in the thread yet. A black dot means you have posted a reply in the thread. I may have sent the whole thing spinning as I initially thought he was referring to the chilies in his avatar box looking like bells. Pete

I was just about to post this...

"...aaannd the most confusing thread award goes to...".

But then I tried to decipher it (been re-reading a few Dan Brown books) and hit 'unread posts', as I always do, and the little 'bells' (are they supposed to be paper?) were ringing to left of specific threads. I instantly assumed it must be a current 'Hot Topics' marker, but then looked at the threads and the topics are completely random.

For example:

'Ribs and Tex Mex'

'Storage units'

'The WOW Science Thread'

'Hua Hin to Pattaya by Bus'

'Winter Olympics 2014 thread'

'Hua Hin Markets'

The above all have that little growing/shrinking ('bell' but possibly paper) icon next to it yet others don't.

What does it mean when that little icon is dancing?

Then I looked closer and realised that those icons only 'shake' on a thread that has 9 replies or more and anything less doesn't 'shake'. If that's the case, I think the forum should 'up' the 'shakable icon threads' to 20-30 replies as I'm sure the majority of threads gets more that that.

Edit: Scrap that last sentence. Just looked and the majority definitely doesn't.

They are folders that indicate a sub forum within that particular forum.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

^

Just clicked the first topic I saw...

'Is there a tourist slump in Hua Hin/Thailand?'

...so what is the sub forum for this? I'm just trying to understand it.

I could see a link for other sites on the pages with the throbbing paper icon. Don't know if that means anything. :D

I am quite sure khmer referes to the topic icons, so maybe this can clear things up a bit....

If you look at post 10 at:

https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... 4&t=587802

Then the different topic icons are described. They are not the same graphic icons as used here, but with a little imagination it's fairly easy to guess which icons used here translates to which description.

Thanks, Chromeman, for revealing all, certainly something I wasn't aware of.

I have seen them but simply chose to ignore them, thinking they were probably some kind of uber-code reserved for software development geeks as opposed to us mere peons.

No, these icons are standardized ones that is included with the software that runs this forum, the phpBB that is one of the most popular and best bulletin programs that is also open source.
