Tailors in Huahin - Looking for Outsize Shorts

Post by raphoedon »

As a guy on the larger side, my waist before you start, I find there is limited choice on big shorts. I thought of perhaps having some made on my next trip to HH.
Can anyone offer some advice as to whether this would be value for money and whether these guys are good at what they do? You see these shops every 100 yards in the town centre but I've never ventured in.
Any reports on experience of using these shops would be appreciated.

raphoedon, if you're embarrassed, please continue by PM. How big are you looking for? I'm not small (there's a clue in the name), I might be able to give you a few pointers, if you'd rather have off the peg.

That should be no problem at all off the peg. Easy options are:

Market Village basement - there are 2 big man shops down there, 52" waist will be one of the smaller sizes they carry. However, the prices are very big as well. I will not consider these 2 shops (basically, I'm a tight git).

Ground floor of the Shopping Mall - let them know what you want, and they will sort out who has your size. It can be a bit hit or miss, but if you're coming in high season, I'd expect the stocks to be high. Prices are reasonable, but be prepared to haggle.

My favourite place is a roadside stall on Petchkasem Road between the Shopping Mall and the Night Market. He's there every day from about 10am until late. He has a huge variety of T-shirts there up to fat boy size. On the right hand end of his stall are shorts. He might not have your size there when you go, but show him the style you like, and tell him your preferred colour. and he will have them for you the following week. I get a lot of clothes from him (shorts, T-shirts, trousers, vests), and the quality is excellent. This guy is genuine, and has never let me down. His prices must be the best in town also. Mrs BB paid 350 Baht (I think) for a couple of pairs of high quality shorts recently. Maybe if you're a first timer there, you might need to haggle a bit.

As BB says, ground floor in the shopping mall, Anne's I think the name is. And also on the floor above the ground floor (first or second, depending on your nationality) there's a place with extra large sizes of shirts, which may also have shorts (not sure).

i had some shorts made in a place just along from soi 80 (armani I think !)

its pretty much the same experience as having a copy shirt made

take your favourite shorts, pick some material and 3 days later more shorts and less money

nowhere near as cheap as where BB suggested though, at least double that

I am big guy too and I have bought boxers from one of the shops on the lower level of Market Village. There is also another shop in the IT mall on the main floor.( I personally have not bought there just haven't needed anything yet.) but they sell stuff.

As far as getting shorts made YOU have to be very careful I have found in the past that the tailors when making shorts try and do them in business style pant material but in shorts.( this was an experience years ago )

Good Luck if you find something good please let me know as a fellow plus size guy always looking for places.

There's also a place in the new section of the night market, can't think of the name, but if heading from the old supermarket as mentioned above along the Petch Road, take the first entrance into this newer market - which is basically an alley, and as that opens out onto the market itself, you'll see a lady on the left prominently displaying shorts up to 52''. Sadly, I'm putting on weight at the mo and needed some new shorts to get me by before shifting it again and I got a perfect fit for my current size for 400 baht.

Lots of advice thanks, I think I will avoid the Tailor idea as I've now got lots of places to look.
Brilliant!
