Flash floods hit Chiang Rai again in many areas on September 23, including Ban Huai Hin Lat in Tambon Ban Pong, Wiang Pa Pao District. This is a Karen hill tribe village located on a high mountain ridge, about 25 kilometers away from Wiang Pa Pao district center.

Floodwater rushed down from the mountain ridge, violently flowing through the center of the village. The water volume was high and the current was strong, sweeping away several vehicles. Some houses were also damaged by the strong currents.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency, or GISTDA, is tracking the flood situation using image data from the Sentinel-1A satellite. On September 23, flooding was detected in parts of Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phichit, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Nakhon Sawan, Ang Thong, Phetchabun, Suphan Buri, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Saraburi, Lopburi, and Uttaradit provinces. The flooded area is estimated to be approximately 1,044,215 rai (about 167,074 hectares or 413,000 acres).

Most of the affected areas are rice fields, residential communities, and transportation routes.

GISTDA has sent this satellite imagery data to the main responsible agencies to support their management efforts, both in planning and monitoring, to further assess the situation. The agency will continue to plan and adjust its satellite signal reception schedule to analyze and monitor the situation in areas expected to be affected by flooding.

Flash floods swept through villages and many famous resorts in Mae Hia Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chiang Mai Province on Friday morning, September 27. Many single-story houses of villagers were eroded by the floodwaters, and several cars were submerged because residents didn't have time to move them. Currently, villagers are calling for help as many elderly people, children, and patients are stranded in the villages.
