The Mekong River level in Nong Khai Province, northeastern Thailand, continued to rise on Thursday, flooding the communities of Chom Mani, Nong Bua, and Kuan Wan.
The Nong Khai City Municipality has placed red flags to warn residents about the possibility of flash floods and has asked villagers to move their belongings to higher ground.

The Office of National Water Resources has issued a warning that between September 12-16, the Mekong River level is expected to rise by approximately 3.50-3.90 meters and is predicted to be 1.50-2.50 meters above the riverbank. If the situation worsens, residents are advised to immediately evacuate to safe areas.

A couple of interesting points for me in this post. On Wednesday, I was looking at Nong Khai centre, from the Laos side of the river, and I thought the river seemed very high, then I thought back to my one visit to Nong Khai, where the water of the Mekong seemed a long way down the river bank and there were actually islets visible in the river bed. So the river must have already risen by several metres to get to the height it already was.

The other is the placing of red flags as a warning. I mean, in this day and age, that's the best they can do? It's shocking rerally, in the same way the rest of the predicted floods has been handled.

I asked about that when in Luang Prabang. As there is a dam just north of the town apparently - I havent checked. But the friendly, smiling skipper of a boat we hired, said no difference in water levels to normal for the time of year, but the water was flowing very, very fast, but very smooth, which I was told is also the norm. And of course it was the rainy season and obviously that was affecting everything and whilst there, they were getting the fall out from cyclone Yagi. The friends I met with, left Hanoi on Friday, just before the typhoon hit, but the rain came with them and didn't stop for 4 days. The waterfall we visited was spectacular. I will post a report about my trip after the weekend.

People on the ground are blaming the Chinese. It's well known that they only open their dams in the rainy season, never in the dry season which is causing endangered species of fish to become extinct.
It was always a worry but of course the Chinese will deny causing a problem.
China's dams can reduce natural flow by up to 70% in the wet season and cause downstream river levels to be four times more than what is normal for the Mekong environment

Khaosod English

1500 hours

Flood situation in Nong Khai Province, northeastern Thailand, as of Saturday afternoon, September 14, the water level of the Mekong River flowing through Nong Khai Province continues to rise.

The water has overflowed the riverbank protection dam along the Mekong River, flooding areas especially in Nong Khai City Municipality, covering a distance of nearly 2 kilometers.

Particularly in the Wat That community, in front of Phra That La Nong, which is a low-lying area, despite efforts by the community and Nong Khai City Municipality to place sandbags as barriers, the water has still breached these defenses.

The floodwater has surged in, overflowing through drainage pipes and flooding Prajak Silpakom Road in the heart of Nong Khai city, with water levels reaching nearly 1 meter high.

The Provincial Electricity Authority of Nong Khai branch has had to cut off the power supply as the floodwater has reached the central meter boxes.

I don't know much about te subject of dams, but all of this talk of China, seems to ignore the fact there are also dams on the Mekong in Laos. Probably Chinese built, but presumably controlled by Laos?
