Flood levels stable in upper Thailand
https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... r-thailand
The Interior Ministry reported on Thursday that flood levels in seven provinces in upper Thailand were either stable or decreasing, except in Nan, where floodwaters were rising.
Traisuree Taisaranakul, secretary to the interior minister, said that the affected provinces included Chiang Rai, Lampang, Nan, Phayao, Phetchabun and Phrae in the North, as well as Udon Thani in the Northeast.
Officials were evacuating flood victims, distributing essential supplies and assessing damage.
According to Ms Traisuree, 12,777 families in 541 villages were affected by flooding.
Nan governor Chainarong Wongyai reported that floodwaters in central districts were rising at a slower pace as rain ceased, and water levels were declining in upper districts. Ten districts in Nan were still heavily inundated.
In Muang district, the Nan River reached a depth of 8.25 metres, just 25 centimetres below the district's embankment.
The governor urged residents living near waterways to move valuables to higher ground and prepare for evacuation, as deluges from northern areas were approaching.
The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) warned of possible flooding and landslides in 35 provinces across all regions until Aug 30 due to heavy rains.
The Meteorological Department warned people in northern and northeastern provinces to be cautious of heavy to very heavy rains from Aug 21 to 27, which may lead to flash floods and overflow, particularly along foothills, near waterways and in low-lying areas. All ships in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf should proceed with caution in thundershower areas during this period.

.....Mekong rising
Surasee Kittimonthon, secretary-general of the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR), on Sunday said water levels in the Mekong river continued to rise and affect low-lying areas in the north and north-eastern provinces.
He said the ONWR had sent an emergency notice to the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS), requesting increased flood surveillance and prediction of daily peaks from water stations along the river in eight provinces – Chiang Rai, Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen and Ubon Ratchathani.
The letter urged officials to report the latest water situation to member countries including Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. It asked Laos to manage water in the dams in the tributaries of the Mekong River and coordinate with China in slowing water discharges from its dams in the upper Mekong River Basin to limit damage from floods as much as possible.
In Bueng Kan province, water in the Mekong river on Sunday morning reached 12.05 metres high – only 95 centimetres below the spill-over level of 13 metres. Thousands of rai of farmland in the province have been flooded.......

Re: Thailand Floods Thread
I was chatting with a friend yesterday. He lives in Chiang Rai, in Mae Chan district, halfway between Chiang Rai city and Mae Sai. He said, it's been raining heavily but so far there has been no floods. However, the situation could change rapidly depending if the officials decide to release water to his way.

Those of us who live in the Hua Hin/Cha Am area often complain about the lack of rainfall, but when you see these stories, I think we have to be somewhat grateful.

Re: Thailand Floods Thread
That is how the floods in 2011 started. I personally witnessed how it made it's way from the North, past Khampaeng Phet, then Ayuthaya.. The tents lined the Asian highway all the way down, and the back roads to Lopburi were unpassable. When they reached Pathumthani, I built a 50 cm high dam around the house in Bangkok. The water was higher than that and the floods lasted almost 3 months. Wasn't much left of the house.
I'll believe it when I see it when they say, 'no promplam'.
My next door neighbor is already starting to move his furniture, and I may just do what I did the last time, rent two rooms in a nearby condo and start shifting stuff too.

If events are close to 2011, it's the omen from hell for the new government.

Well, the one in the driver's seat at the time went around inspecting the damage in her Burberry boots, while one of her persons in charge was putting 10 ton sandbags in Pathumthani so people couldn't remove them, and was playing around in his jet ski ..

Yes, the Burberry boots had a great run. Months and months of cartoons and articles, closely followed by the two Green Mambas that got loose and were swimming around in the floods terrorizing villages!

My son says there was another eight hours of heavy rain in Phuket today, and a lot more to come this week.
Re: Thailand Floods Thread
I remember kayaking through fields brushing treetops in Bangsaphan in the big floods of 2016/17.
It all seems to keep happening in ever-decreasing cycles (timeframes) and is down partly to bad water management. The reservoirs are either too full, so they dump the water into the rivers, which floods the surrounding villages. Then, six months later, they're empty, causing droughts ... its all very predictable.
The Khmers seemed pretty good at managing water a thousand years ago.
With El Niño and La Niña cycles coming back to back now with no 'stable period' in between, it's only going to get much worse.

Good luck with that ...
Tourism operators seek long-term flood plan
Regional tourism operators have called for a long-term plan to manage floods and storms to prevent possible damage to tourism and the economy, following the floods in northern provinces and a deadly landslide in Phuket.
Thaneth Tantipiriyakij, president of the Phuket Tourist Association, said the landslide and heavy rains had killed 13 people, including at least two Russian tourists, shocking tourism operators in Phuket.
He said this tragedy should prompt the government to quickly implement long-term infrastructure planning for Phuket.
These include revoking plans to allow building to a greater height from sea level or taller buildings with a shorter setback length.
...
Ms Pariyakorn said the floods covering 10 provincial districts had been the most severe seen in many years because of the heavy rainfall.
She said deforestation along with slash and burn agriculture have made the province more vulnerable to floods as there are not enough large trees to absorb and slow the spread of the flood water.
Ms Pariyakorn said the government should tackle this issue by redeveloping the whole water management for the region.
