Just after posting that, I read that the dam is now 97% full and Petchaburi residents have been warned that they may have to endure flooding for the next couple of months!

Just looked back, BB, and as you say, nobody reacted. I missed it too. Not sure why.

Nine NE provinces still affected by flooding
Published: 5/08/2018 at 11:29 AM

Nine provinces in the northeastern region are still affected by flooding as a result of heavy rain and overflow from the Mekong River, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department chief Chayapol Thitisak said on Sunday.

The nine provinces are Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani, Bung Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Roi-et, Kalasin and Yasothon.

Hardest hit is Nakhon Phanom, where water from the Mekong River has inundated parts of 12 districts -- Muang, Renu Nakhon, Pla Pak, Tha Uthen, Phon Sawan, That Phanom, Ban Phaeng, Na Kae, Wang Yang, Si Songkhram, Na Wa and Nathom -- affecting 12,256 households with 26,898 people, along with 179,704 rai of farmland.

In nearby Mukdahan, parts of Dong Luang, Muang, Nikhom Kham Soi, Don Tan, Wan Yai, Nong Sung and Kham Cha-i districts have been flooded, affecting 11,443 households with 38,355 people and 28,582 rai of farmland.

In Ubon Ratchathani, Khemmarat, Pho Sai, Khong Chiam, Na Tan, Si Muang Mai and Khuang Nai, districts adjacent to the Mekong river have been flooded, affecting 4,163 people and 4,835 rai of farmland.

In Amnat Charoen, overflow from the Mekong River has swamped portions of Muang, Senangkha Nikhom, Hua Taphan, Lue Amnat and Chanuman districts, affecting 1,922 people and 5,548 rai of agricultural land.

In Bung Kan, five districts by the Mekong River in Bung Kan province -- Muang, Bung Khla, Si Wilai, So Phisai and Pak Khat -- are partially underwater.

Also hit by flooding are six districts in Sakon Nakhon province, two in Roi-et, three in Kalasin and five in Yasothon. The floodwaters in these provinces are receding.

HHTel wrote: Sun Aug 05, 2018 2:36 pm Wasn't it the release of water from the Kaeng Krachan dam coupled with heavy rains that flooded Petchaburi a couple of years ago. I remember jetskis were being used on Petchkasem Road.

Will this be a repeat of what happened then?
I believe they are releasing water from the dam so anything is possible

^ The disturbing thing is that it's only the beginning of August. Rains could go on until into November. How heavy and accumulative we'll have to wait and see. Pete

I know that they want to conserve as much water in dams as possible, but in typical Thai dithering they wait until it becomes a danger, both to the dams and anyone near them, before doing anything. The SW Monsoon is well established, and has at least a couple of more months to run. They seem to be incapable of understanding weather forecasts and predictions. The Monsoon in India is a good indication of what is likely to happen here about a week after it dumps on the sub-continent. But it would never do to take any notice of what is happening in the rest of the world.

Spot on. They were warned well in advance of the 2011 flooding by the US and others but took no notice. The Thai authorities are never wrong!

Does anyone have any advice on how to prepare in the event that things get really bad? Glad we bought the Everest now but thinking along the lines of an emergency grab-bag, some climbing rope... all that good 'prepper' kinda stuff.

Should be ok in HH. However if BKK get a repeat of 2011 then if you have rooms to spare in your property, then think of a number, double it and rent it out to the Bangkokians!

Floods to hit central Phetchaburi Tuesday evening
Published: 6/08/2018 at 02:01 PM
Online news: https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

Water started overflowing down the spillway at Kaeng Krachan dam on Monday, bringing warnings of flooding 20-70 centimetres deep in the middle region of Phetchaburi province from Tuesday evening.

Deputy Prime Minister Chatchai Sarikulya said on Monday that runoff from the Tanao Sri ranges had raised the rate of flow into the dam, in Kaeng Krachan district of Phetchaburi, from 6-7 cubic metres per second to 100 cubic metres per second.

Efforts were being made to divert water before it reached the dam and minimise the overflow. Flooding around the centre of Phetchaburi should be capped at 50cm deep, Gen Chatchai said. Flood levels at low-lying areas of the province could be deeper.

The deputy prime minister said he was concerned that the southwest monsoon might bring more rain in the next few days.

Somkiat Prajamwong, secretary-general of the Office of the National Water Resources, said overflow from Kaeng Krachan dam into the Phetchaburi River would start to flood central Phetchaburi on Tuesday evening. Flooding would begin at 20-30cm deep and could rise to 50-70cm. This was about the same as last year, he said.

If there was more rain, the rate of overflow down the spillway of the Kaeng Krachan dam could rise to 250-300 cubic metres per second, but water would not overflow the crest of the dam, which was seven metres above the spillway, Mr Somkiat said.

Elsewhere, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation on Monday warned that rivers might overflow in Bung Kan, Kanchanaburi, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Ratchaburi, Roi Et, Sakon Nakhon and Ubon Ratchathani provinces.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is scheduled to visit Phetchaburi province on Tuesday.

When the flooding was imminent back in 2011, we rented two rooms in an apartment nearby just to store stuff, and even that wasn't enough. We thought leaving some less valuable stuff in the house up on tables and double-decker beds would have helped, but the flood was more than a meter deep and lasted for three months. Only the stuff in the rented apartment survived, all the rest - books, some clothes, the built-in kitchen cabinets, furniture - did not.
Hopefully not round two.. :(

Fortunately I had the X-trail by then, wading depth 400 mm. Carried lots of sandbags with it, alas to no avail.

Glad I returned from Bkk earlier today. Because of all the reports I was half expecting water on the road between the two hospitals, but all was good.
