I remember 7 years ago, it was 150 baht from the town, up to the railway. That was for my Thai friends, not me. Thought it would be more by now. Haven't taken a Tuk Tuk for 5-6 years now.

I paid 120bt for a tuktuk last night

Sorry to go slightly off-topic yet again here,- but in my earlier post I mentioned that IMO the 4-wheel tuk-tuks tended to drive steadier than the 3-wheelers.
Well just to cement this fact somewhat over the last week alone there has been 3 bad accidents with 3-wheel tuk-tuks colliding with cars! One incident put 2 Western tourists in hospital! 2 crashes had the tuk-tuk on their sides in the middle of the main traffic-light junctions.
(I know this due to my wife showing me the reports & photos from H.H.police's website)
Taking a taxi may well be a safer option for about the same money.

Just an update on the Tuk Tuk/Taxi price sign at Market Village. A couple of weeks ago the wife and I were there and decided to try catching a tuk tuk back to Takiab at lunchtime. Went to two different drivers and pointed to the price on the sign that refers to Blue Wave at Takiab (150 baht) which is a few hundred metres further than our destination. Both drivers quoted 200 baht, with one saying that the sign referred to low season prices and the other driver stating that it referred to 'per person'. Today the wife went and tried again, this time pointing to the Thai side of the sign and today's excuse after being quoted 200 baht, was that the sign is 5 years old. It is funny that in the evening we can get a tuk tuk from the centre of town to Takiab for 150 baht no worries at all, but they seem to dig their heels in at MV during the day. I guess there are plenty of customers there for them, so they can pick and choose. I'm not going to worry about ringing the complaints number on the sign as that probably won't achieve much. Generally we just cross the road and either catch the baht bus or flag down an empty tuk tuk and get the 150 baht fare anyway. More just for info here and just wondering what the point of the sign is...gotta love Thailand :)

The young male Tuk Tuk drivers at MV are generally rude, arrogant and couldn't are less if they refuse your offer of a reasonable fare.
They need to be pulled into line by the authorities, especially the MV management, as they spoil tourists perceptions of HH.

I don't know if you are aware, but all Tuk Tuk drivers are on a strict daily rotation as to their home location. Therefore, you get a different set of drivers working out of there each day.

Welcome to the new "Wild West" supply and demand will always rule if there is no-one to enforce the rules.

Try getting a taxi in Sukhumvit or Silom in the evening, during rush hour or heavens forbid an evening when it's raining... Same story.

My advice is to find a good 4 wheeler tuk-tuk driver (better still family business) let them pick you up from home a few times, get their telephone number and tell them you will phone them for the return journey and pay them both directions on the homeward journey.

I guarantee that after a short while you will become a priority "loyal customer" and they will do anything within reason to keep you.

I never drink and drive but enjoy an occasional beer with friends and family. I guarantee that if I phone my friendly Tuk Tuk driver (family) they will pick me up within 30 minutes from anywhere downtown. It's not rocket science, regular customers override the Wild West. :guns:

i can see your point and sympathise, but try getting a taxing in Sydney, its 90 baht just to step into the cab, then you are at the mercy of the taxi driver as to which route he may take to make the fare higher. a 20 minute cab ride is likely to set you back 1000 baht.

I know where i would rather catch a cab/tuk-tuk.

Exactly how I'm doing it too, but this isn't any good option/probably will not work for tourists who are visiting for 1-4 weeks or thereabout!

Agreed huahin4ever but for tourists I don't have an answer except bargain like hell, accept, or be prepared to walk. The system is not going to change quickly and please think of the transport cost most tourists pay at home. It's not right but it's still going to be cheaper... And that's what the Tuk Tuk drivers know...

I agree SydneyGuy :thumb:

I had to ask a taxi driver once, just how many Sydney Opera Houses they had in Sydney!

There could be a business disruptor on the horizon. Uber have now started trialing Ubermoto into Bangkok about 5 days ago. It will be similar to how their business model for private taxis work. Will Uber Tuk Tuk be next? Now that would throw a spanner so to speak into the Tuk Tuk cash economy.

The main issue is the arrogance and downright rudeness of the young male tuk tuk drivers. What I love about Thailand and HH is the gentleness and polite nature of the Thais. These guys are a blight on HH and need to be pulled into line.
Nine times out of ten I refuse their outrageous fare demand and catch a Songthaew home.
This is of course in general terms as not all young male tuk tuk operators are like this. I have never had a problem with an older male or female driver, always reasonable and polite.

Just returned from MV and had a few shopping bags. Tuk Tuk back to my condo, less than 2 km, was touted at a take it or leave it 150 baht. The response from the less than helpful driver was that next person will pay, and not his problem.
I went down to the main road kerb and got a Tuk Tuk for 120 baht. A charming girl driver who had nothing but contempt for the MV mafia!
These prices are more expensive than Australia for a 2km journey.
It is about time the body who controls these drivers pulled them in and explained the notion of 'ripping off' farangs.

The number to complain is on the photo that I provided earlier in the thread - let us know what reaction you get.
