Also agree about the 'farang compounds' being the most likely places to be targeted for crime, I sold alarms here for a few years and it was always these edge of town housing developments that were the main targets, opportunists mostly, in and out in 3/4 minutes.
Rent a place on the Southern outskirts of the city and explore South towards Sam Roi Yot, in my opinion Pak Nam Pran, Pranburi, Sam Roi Yot will be a much better area for you to live. Only 30 minutes from central HH when you want to go into town for shopping and the beaches are much cleaner and more beautiful.
I lived in Hua Hin for 5 years and now 3 years at Sam Roi Yot, never had any problems at all with crime.

As an insurance broker in the Hua Hin area: Hua Hin is very very safe now when it comes to burglaries. About 5 years ago we had burglaries at clients houses all the time (1 a week for sure), but in 2014 we had only 2 burglaries at a client of us in the entire year.
And yes, we do have more then 2 clients :-)

We really like the suggestions about going south of Hua Hin. We will definitely check that area out, thanks. We plan to get an education visa, so one of us would have to attend a school. I was hoping to take a Thai language class in Hua Hin, so I guess I could just take a songtaew there? This definitely gives us something to explore when we visit.

Thais know that if they target farangs, it will be ten times worse for them because tourism is so important to the Thai economy.

Just a heads up - thieves entered my house on the weekend and took my wife's purse and phone while she was in the shower and I was out (soi 102 area). I suspect it was the team of builders in the house behind but cannot prove anything of course. It could have been much worse, there was a lot of stuff lying around and thankfully she didn't get the shock (or potentially dangerous situation) of catching them in the act (wish I had though). Time to be more careful with locking the door even when someone is home

i am glad your wife is ok. of course they waited for you to leave. farangs are watched like a hawk by Thais. 99% is just friendly curiosity and total boredom.
i lock my rental house up like a jailhouse. bars on the windows and doors, motion detectors and alarms on my motorcycle and front yard. all internal doors are locked. pad locks on all external doors and gates.
anybody who thinks that they are not a target is dreaming. and by the way, the house came like that. all i did was change the pad locks. they also put bars over attic crawl ways. this is in Khao Takiap, a sort of a upscale beach third world chic area with very poor people living in shacks all around.
all my Thai neighbors have glass on the top of their walls will razor wire and dogs. that should tell you something. remember it is not just high ticket items. Thais or the very poor workers from hell hole countries will steal a cellphone charger or a pair of shoes so they can sell them at the market or maybe use them. Both have been stolen from me. lucky so far nothing expensive.
