Next to Soi 102...are they constructing a mosque ??

Post by Socrates »

Today I saw the golden dome on a building next to Soi 102. (Direction to Soi 104, about 2,5 km away from Petchkasem Road) This building looks like it is still under construction and it looks like a mosque.

Is anybody knowing anything about this building ?

I live parttime in Soi 102 and would'nt like to have this neighbours. Especially the muezzin's crying 5 times a day.

There are many buildings in Thailand with golden domes. Most of them are Buddhist temples. What in particular makes you think this will be a mosque?

In the extremely unlikely event that it is, I would be very surprised if the call to prayer was allowed to be broadcast. I believe there are 3 mosques in Cha-am, but I've never heard (or heard speak of) a call to prayer.

At least one of those mosques around Cha-am does have calls for prayers. You can hear them when golfing at Palm Hills.

Yes, at one stage we could hear it up soi six occasionally but I've not heard it in ages now. They certainly do still have their call to prayers at the mosque that's located across the road from the place I buy milk, but the volume is a lot lower than what I've heard elsewhere.

If I were the OP I'd be more concerned it I saw the municipality installing propaganda speakers in the road.

I was waiting for a train in the Bangkok area last year when outside the station was a mosque. They were definitely allowed to do their call for prayers.

I thought the building looked more like a Russian orthodox church when viewing it from soi102.

Having read this thread and also living near 102 I took a bit more of a look around this morning while running some errands and saw "golden domes" in question. It is not a mosque but a Christian church topped with Russian Orthodox crosses, aka Suppedaneum cross.

The building is not completed and looks like it will be good sized church. I wonder if the fall in the Russian ruble will have an effect on the efforts?

Just as a matter of interest, what is the approximate Muslim population of HH? I understand Thailand as a whole is something like 5 or 6%, but obviously there are going to be greater densities in different areas.

A mosque was built and completed in Pranburi about a year ago. On opening I was dismayed to hear the traditional mohammedan call to prayer issuing forth however after a few days the noise suddenly stopped and has not been heard since. Obviously someone or somebody thankfully put a stop to the prayer calls.

When I moved to Pranburi about 5 years ago I never ever saw a mohammedan on the streets here but now there are a considerable number highly visible and I sometimes wonder where they came from; probably from Thailands troubled southern provinces.

Yes soon to be infiltrating into a village near you.

Thank goodness the military boys are not too welcoming to abhorrent behaviour in LOS.

Just read an article on the net suggesting > 200,000 principally from the "war torn mid east" have applied for asylum in Deutschland.
Hopefully they didn't mention the war !

Plenty of that already in HH.

Now that we've established that there will be no nasty wailing from the muezzin, here's a nice little clip of some Russian Orthodox church bell ringing... :D

Bell ringing can be a nuisance, I once lived next to a church in Germany that used to toll away early in the mornings at the weekends, it was nothing musical, more like someone hitting a suspended oil drum with a sledgehammer for about an hour.

I was down that way, so took a few snaps. For info, the dogs down there are amongst the most vicious I've encountered in Thailand.

The crosses are symbols of the Greek/Russian Orthodox churches, maybe also some other related.
You can also compare the onion domes with the Kremlin's
