What's On & Where To Go Hua Hin - Wat Huay Monkol

Post by Big Boy »

Another one where photos were not published on the forum first time around. In fact I couldn't find a current thread on this popular attraction.

Wat Huay Monkol

The Wat Huay Mongkol temple complex located some 15 kilometers west of Hua Hin is famous for its enormous statue of one of Thailand's most famous monks, named Luang Phor Thuad.

Commissioned by the Queen of Thailand, Wat Huay Mongkol houses the largest statue of Luang Phor Thuat in Thailand in a park-like setting. The Giant Luang Phor Thuad statue, which is about 12 meters high and 10 meters wide, is set on a large mound wide a wide stairway leading to it and can be seen from far away reaching higher than the trees. On each side of the giant statue, there is a huge wooden elephant. Local people walk in circles under the belly of the elephants wishing for good luck.

Luang Phor Thuad, whose name is sometimes spelled Luang Phor Thuat, lived some 400 years ago in Southern Thailand. He is now famous all over the country for the miracles that he performed. It was said that Luang Phor Thuad turned salt water into fresh, drinkable water on multiple occasions.

Unfortunately the commercial side of Buddhism is very apparent, with large safes converted into giant money boxes, and various trinkets on sale all over the place. Unless there is something you particularly want, it is best to walk straight past this element of the temple.

Aside from the Buddha angle, there are some fantastic grounds to explore. Unfortunately, the album was created the day after the 8 Nov storm, and the lake was well overflowing, with many of the places you can normally sit to relax under water, and those that weren't were filled with very slippery mud.

It is easy to waste a couple of hours just wandering through the beautifully landscaped parkland - so relaxing. The lake contains a lot of fish, and you can buy packets of food to feed them from the many vantage points.

A nice day out.

When did you take those pictures BB, the lake seems a bit flooded, I remember walking around that roofed structure and it was quite high out of the water on a grass island when I was last there.

It was soon after last year's big storm. I don't know why, but the photos were never posted here.

Big Boy, Great pictures of the Big statue and especially of the over flow of the lake. I have been to this place many times and never see it with the flooded areas.
Pluto is my favorite planet!, especially now that we all can see close up
pictures of it.

I dont think I have ever seen so many collection boxes in a Thai temple before.

What do they do with all the money they make, is it ploughed back into the local community in the form of donations to schools and clinics, or is it collected purely to fund even more kitsch attractions to draw in the crowds so they can keep donating?

The good Lord Buddha must turn in his grave, when he sees what's being done in his name, at this place.
It's a money making machine.

:agree: but Thais love it.

He's meant to be the biggest image of his type, but we saw another near Singburi last Saturday. However, the Singburi version was painted gold - just as big though.

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

These were taken in April 2004. On the left as you go in the salas for praying / donating were already completed. It wasn't very busy back then.
