During 30-31 July, the low pressure covers Tonkin Bay and upper Vietnam while the strong southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand. Outbreaks of continuous rain and isolated heavy downpour are forecast for the Northeast, the North, the Central, the East and the South. Still, watch for a flash flood in risk areas due to the severe conditions. The strong wind and waves are forecast 2-4 meters high in the Andaman Sea and 2-3 meters high in the upper Gulf. All ships should proceed with caution, and small boats keep ashore. People along the coast of the western South and the East should beware strong winds.
So there will be no rain in the West. But those ghost winds are still causing havoc at sea! I really believe that these wind warnings are CYA forecasts, especially since the boat sinking disaster in Phuket.

I'm no weather expert - if I'm getting wet, it is usually a good sign that it is raining.

I read your 'wind' comments, and turned my head towards the front door, which is always open.

On our front fence we have 3 flags - they are blowing at full pelt. Beyond our fence there is quite a large area of jungle. The treetops are really swaying. Going back to my deep sea fishing days in the UK, if there was half that movement on the trees, the boats would not be allowed to go to sea.

Whatever, we are experiencing a lot more wind than I can see indicated in the above forecast.

Localised wind gradients can be affected by many geographical features, such as the hills to the west of you. The same reasons that it may be raining where you are, and nothing over in the next Soi. Ocean winds are recorded on the open surface, and there is simply insufficient wind speed to produce the wave heights that they are predicting.

I'm not disputing what you guys are saying, but the wind here has just thrown a metal garden bench 6'. Yes, we do live West of a bloody big hill.

107 reservoirs brace for more monsoon rain

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... nsoon-rain

As many as 107 reservoirs are approaching maximum holding capacity as technicians race against time to drain them before further monsoons hit the country later this month.
Somkiat Prajamwong, secretary-general of the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR), said on Friday most of these reservoirs are located in the northeastern part of the country.

Among them are four dams -- Kaeng Krachan in Phetchaburi province, Vajiralongkorn in Kanchanaburi province, Pranburi in Prachaup Khirikhan province and Nam Un in Sakhon Nakhon province -- that the ONWR has put on a "special monitoring" list.
Mr Somkiat said the government has already taken steps to reduce the impact of any overflow into downstream areas.

"Affected villages will be taken care of. We have sent warnings and deployed assistance in advance," he said.
The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) was also keen to suggest the situation was under control.
"We have survived the first crisis. The impact on low-lying land downstream has been contained and cushioned. The new challenge is to drain part of Kaeng Krachan dam to make space for more water from the upcoming rain," said RID chief Tongplew Kongchan.

The monsoon trough will arrive sometime between Aug 20 and early September, according to official forecasts from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), released yesterday.
The areas that will be affected are the upper North and upper Northeast, while a strong southwest monsoon will cover the Gulf of Thailand and the West, causing heavy rain.

At least one storm will hit the country in September and is likely to affect Mukdahan, Nakhon Panom or Ubon Ratchathani first, said TMD chief, Wanchai Sakudomchai.
Despite the seemingly ominous weather forecast, Mr Wanchai urged the public not to panic as the intensity of the weather system is likely to weaken as it passes over the Philippines and China.

In the meantime, the country will experience thunderstorms and heavy rain until Tuesday before clear skies return for 10 days ahead of the expected monsoon, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).

Heavy rain this weekend could result in flash floods, forest runoff and mudslides, and the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand could see waves reaching up two or three metres, said DDPM director-general Chayapol Thitisak.

He said people in 57 provinces should be vigilant, noting that 17 of them are in the North, 16 in the Northeast, 15 in the Central Plains and nine in the South.

Another nine coastal provinces were also warned about rough seas.
Bad weather has been felt all across the country this month.

In Sakon Nakhon, a couple of days of heavy rain caused 4 million cubic metres of water to flow into the already brimming Nam Un dam in Phang Khon district.
As of yesterday, the dam remained at 2% above its storage capacity.
Officials at the dam are expediting efforts to release water and said the facility's structure remains strong.

In the southern district of Surat Thani's Phanom district, Moo 1 and 3 in tambon Klong Sok were flooded from canal overflow while strong currents in Klong Bang Man damaged a bridge leading to Moo 2, making it impassable.

And then they post the following. How does a tropical depression 200 Kms EAST of Hainan Island, moving to North East,
get to enter Thailand and Vietnam?
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

https://www.tmd.go.th/en/index.php

At 10.00 a.m. LST on 11 August, the tropical depression over the South China Sea and lay centered about 200 kilometers east of Hainan, China or at latitude 21.0 degree north and longitude 112.0 degree east with the maximum sustained winds about 50 km/hr. The storm was moving northeast slowly. It is expected to move to upper Vietnam during 13-14 August 2018. Continuous rain with isolated heavy to very heavy rain is likely in the Northeast and the North. Flash floods are possible for the risk areas. People should beware of severe condition. The strong southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf. The stronger wind and wave are likely 2-4 meters high in the Andaman Sea

Wet week ahead for 49 provinces
Published: 11/08/2018 at 03:24 PM
Online news: https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

Residents throughout the North, Northeast, Central Plains and South have been told to brace for heavy rain and high waves as a tropical depression moves across the country from Monday through Thursday.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department is coordinating efforts with its offices in 49 provinces to be on full alert for heavy downpours and strong winds and waves, director-general Chayaphol Thitisak said on Saturday.

Officials of the provincial offices have been asked to closely monitor rain volume and warn local residents living in at-risk areas of danger from natural disaster.

The Meteorological Department on Saturday forecast isolated heavy downpours in northern and northeastern provinces on Monday and Tuesday, as a tropical depression over the South China Sea moves inland.

The storm is moving northeast slowly and is expected to be over upper Vietnam on Monday and Tuesday. Residents living in flood-prone areas of the North and Northeast have been advised to be alert for runoff, overflowing rivers and landslides.

A strong southwest monsoon, meanwhile, prevails over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Strong winds and high waves of 2-4 metres are expected in the Andaman. All ships should proceed with caution, while small boats should remain ashore, the Meteorological Department said.

People living in western coastal areas of the South, as well as residents of eastern provinces, should beware of strong winds during this period, it said.

As many as 107 reservoirs nationwide are approaching maximum holding capacity as technicians race against time to drain them before further storms arrive.

In Kanchanaburi, the Vajiralongkorn Dam overflowed this week, sending out a large volume of water that flooded properties alongside the reservoir. Eight houses were heavily inundated and several more were expected to be affected.

Pol Col Thotsaporn Pathumya, commander of the 13th border patrol unit, on Saturday led a team of border patrol police to distribute necessities to the affected households.

As an FYI, Hua Hin now has its own radar loop. See below link.

Looking at the center of the source, the device(s) must be in one of the Thai Navy buildings/sites directly adjacent to the beach. Pete

Storm warning for 58 provinces
Published: 15/08/2018 at 02:13 PM
Online news: https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... -provinces

A storm warning is in force for 58 provinces through Saturday, with the possibility of flash floods, runoff and landslides, caused by tropical storm Bebinca, which is moving towards upper Vietnam and Laos.

Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation chief Chayaphol Thitisak said on Wednesday the department was closely monitoring weather conditions, accumulated rain volume, water sources and risk factors.

This was coupled with the Meteorological Department’s latest warning that tropical storm Bebinca would trigger heavy rain in the North and the Northeast from Wednesday to Saturday. Strong winds and high seas were forecast for the Gulf and Andaman Sea.

As a consequence, 58 provinces across the country had been ordered on full alert for natural disasters, he said.

Three southern provinces - Surat Thani, Ranong and Phangnga - were warned to brace for landslides. Other provinces in the North, Northeast, Central Plains and the South could expect heavy rain that might trigger flooding and landslides, said Mr Chayaphol.

The Meteorological Department at noon on Wednesday said tropical storm Bebinca ws over the South China Sea and expected to move over upper Vietnam and into Laos on Aug 16-17. Continuous rain and isolated torrential downpours are likely in the Northeast and the North. Flash floods were possible in at-risk areas.

The strong southwest monsoon still prevails over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Strong wind waves of 2-4 metres were expected in the Andaman Sea, rising above 4 metres high during thundershowers, and 2-3 metres high in the upper Gulf.

All ships should proceed with caution, and small boats should remain ashore.

In Sakon Nakhon, the discharge rate has been accelerated at Nam Un dam, which is now above 100% of its safe manageable capacity, to accommodate further expected rainfall.

About 2 million cubic metres of water flowed into the dam on Wednesday, an irrigation official said.

With the influence of Bebinca now moving into the area it was necessary to up the discharge rate to about 2 million cubic metres per day through the spillway and irrigation canals.

Heavy rain is expected in the province on Aug 16-17.

The weather office in the upper Northeast on Wednesday warned residents along the banks of the Mekong to brace for river overflow. They were urged to closely monitor weather forecasts.

Rain lashes Bangkok

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

Heavy rain lashed Bangkok on Wednesday afternoon, flooding streets and snarling traffic under a dense, dark canopy of grey.
On Rama IV Road in Klong Toey district, traffic was crawling as vehicles sloshed through ankle-deep water and motorcyclists cowered before driving rain.
Many pulled over to seek shelter from the descending torrent, hastily pulling on raincoats over already-soaked clothing.
On the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 22 and Sai Nam Thip 2, a 7-11 was doing brisk business selling plastic ponchos as passers-by ducked into the shop to escape the onslaught from wind-whipped dark clouds above.

First the power blacked out! Back on after about 1 hour. No wiind, just a straight down deluge!
