We're getting dumped on over here by the bucket load for the past hour. Local flooding etc. I watched this on the radar coming across the gulf from the Hua Hin side. Did you get anything out of it?

It was needed here as very dry the past two weeks. Pete

We had fairly heavy rain for almost 2 hours so it must be localised.

28 provinces on alert for deluge

Published: 17/07/2018 at 05:12 AM
Newspaper section: News https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

The country is on alert this week as heavy rains are forecast and possibly flash floods that could cause havoc including overflows and rough seas.

Authorities in 28 provinces have been contacted by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) to prepare for the deluge, forest run-off and strong storms that could cause waves of up to 3 metres from Sunday to Thursday.

Officials were instructed to follow up on local water conditions and remain vigilant about possible safety risks.

Rescue units have been organised to deal with various situations so they can be deployed around the clock and boats given thorough safety checks, officials said.

DDPM director-general Chayapol Thitisak said the monsoon is now swiping Myanmar, upper Thailand and Laos. Heavy downpours are also expected over much of Thailand.

Six of the 28 provinces on high alert are in the North. They are Tak, Phitsanulok, Phichit, Phetchabun, Nan and Nakhon Sawan. Eight more in the Northeast are Sakon Nakhon, Udon Thani, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Yasothon, Roi Et and Maha Sarakham.

The five provinces in the Central Plains are Kanchanaburi, Sa Kaeo, Chantaburi, Prachin Buri and Trat. They other nine in a state of readiness are in the South: Chumphon, Surat Thani, Phatthalung, Ranong, Phuket, Phangnga, Krabi, Satun and Trang.

In Sakon Nakhon, officials were racing against time to siphon water from Nong Han lake so it can receive more water from the Phu Phan mountains following hours of persistent rain.

The province was hit by a deluge in July 2016, the worst flood record there in 40 years.

Mr Chayapol said the Marine Department, and Marine Police and Department of Fisheries were told to patrol the sea to warn ships to take the necessary safety precautions.

Wow. Proving once again how sensible most of the denizens of the HH Forum are in their choice of abode.

Prayers for those in peril in the coming days in other provinces. :?

It's getting even more complicated as a fast moving tropical storm is about to cross northern Vietnam and hit the northeast somewhere in the next four days. Stay tuned to your weather links. Pete

Storm Son-Tinh reaches the Northeast
Published: 19/07/2018 at 12:27 PM
Online news: https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

Tropical storm Son-Tinh landed in Vietnam and was expected to downgrade to a depression as it moved into the upper Northeast of Thailand on Thursday, with the forecast for heavy rain and flood warnings for most of the country.

Wanchai Sakudomchai, director-general of the Meteorological Department, said Son-Tinh hit Vinh city of Vietnam about 4am, bringing winds of around 70 kilometres per hour. It was moving westward at 20kph and expected to become a depression and then a low pressure system.

He warned of heavy rain, flash floods, runoff and overflowing streams in the North, Northeast, East and South on Thursday.

In the North, the warning was for Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Kamphaeng Phet, Lampang, Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Phayao, Phetchabun, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Phrae, Sukhothai, Tak and Uttaradit provinces.

In the Northeast it was for Amnat Charoen, Bung Kan, Buri Ram, Chaiyaphum, Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Loei, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Nong Khai, Sakon Nakhon, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani and Yasothon.

In the East, Chanthaburi and Trat provinces were likely to be affected.

For the South the same warning was for Krabi, Phangnga, Phuket and Ranong.

On Friday, more rain is predicted in the North and Northeast. In the North, warnings were issued for Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Phayao, Phrae and Tak.

In the Northeast, impacts would remain in Bung Kan Loei, Nakhon Phanom, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Nong Khai, Sakon Nakhon and Udon Thani.

Small boats were advised to stay ashore in the East and the eastern coast of the South, where the southwesterly monsoon is expected to bring heavy rain and stir up high waves until Sunday.

.."The impact of the Son-Tinh storm was also felt in Prachuap Khiri Khan
There is no doubt that there will be more rain, its the Monsson season! The expired Son-Tinh storm did not cause the rain in Prachuap, just an increase in the normal SW moisture rich airflow towards its low pressure area to the north. That is a normal phenomena that occurs regardless of any "storm".

The develpoing depression in the Gulf of Tonkin is actually moving East, away from China. The current synoptic charts are showing light surface winds from the SW, but the upper winds are up to around 40 knots, which should carry any rain towards the north east.

It has been said before, but it appears to me that the Thai Met Dept just issue a CYA forecast in the hope that some of it MAY turn out to be correct! Either that, or it all gets badly distorted in translation!
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!

Most provinces warned of heavy rain, floods, landslides
Published: 30/07/2018 at 03:55 PM
Online news: https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

Fifty-nine of the country's 76 provinces have been warned to brace for floods, burst riverbanks, runoff and landslides as heavy rains are expected in upper Thailand on July 30-31.

Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation chief Chayaphol Thitisak said on Saturday that heavy downpours recently hit several provinces in the North, the Northeast and the Central Plains. This might trigger overflowing, flooding and landslides in at-risk areas.

He ordered provincial disaster prevention and mitigation offices in 59 provinces across the country to brace for the natural disaster.

The provinces include 17 in the North (Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Tak, Phitsanulok, Phichit, Phetchabun, Nakhon Sawan and Uthai Thani), all 20 provinces in the Northeast, eight in the Central region (Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat), and all 14 provinces in the South, said Mr Chayaphol.

The Meteorological Department on Saturday warned that outbreaks of continuous rain and isolated heavy downpours are forecast in the North, the Northeast, the Central, the East and the South on July 30-31. People living in at-risk areas were told to watch for flash floods.

In its latest weather warning, the department said that lower pressure is covering Tonkia Bay and upper Vietnam while the strong southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand.

Strong winds and high waves of 2-4 metres are expected in the Andaman Sea and 2-3 metres high in the upper Gulf. All ships should proceed with caution, while small boats should remain ashore.

People living along the coast of the western South and the East should beware of strong winds during this period.

In Kalasin, floodwaters in several areas in Khao Wong and Na Khu districts rose by 30cm on Saturday.

Excessive water runoff from Huay Yang stream in Sakon Nakhon coupled with continuous heavy downpours caused rising floodwaters in Khao Wang.

Lam Phayang reservoir and streams in Kalasin overflowed on Saturday, sending a huge volume of water to flood farmland in Khao Wong and Na Khu districts.

Almost 2,000 rai of agricultural areas were inundated.

Kalasin governor Kaisorn Kongchalard said he has ordered all districts to closely monitor the situation at water sources in their areas and survey areas prone to flooding.

In Nakhon Phanom, residents of Na Kae district were asked to move their belongings and animals to higher ground as Nam Kam River, which receives water from Nong Han Lake, burst its banks.

Agricultural areas at Pak Bang village in tambon Piman of Na Kae district and 10 houses near the river were inundated. Some 200 houses would be at risk if rain did not stop.

Bancha Srichaluang, chairman of the tambon administration organisation in Piman, said he had ordered local leaders in all villages to warn local residents to move their belongings and animals to higher areas as the overflow from Nam Kam River might engulf their land.

In Sakon Nakhon, more than 7,300 rai of agricultural areas in several districts in this province were inundated due to heavy rain.

Suchote Kanchanakul, caretaker chief of Phon Na Kaeo district, said 50 houses in two villages in Phon Na Kaew district remained flooded.

Strong winds and high waves of 2-4 metres are expected in the Andaman Sea and 2-3 metres high in the upper Gulf. All ships should proceed with caution, while small boats should remain ashore.

According to their own synoptic charts, issued at 06 UTC today, the strongest surface winds that I can see are no more than 15 knots. How do they produce waves of 2-4 metres? Their synoptic chart is either BS, or their reading of it is BS!

There is very light rain in Bangkok, but my 73 year old lungs can blow more wind than is around!

It’s certainly been fairly dry for the past week, so a drop of the wet stuff wouldn’t go amiss!!
