Heavy rain floods Nakhon Phanom

NAKHON PHANOM — Continuous heavy rain has flooded more than 15,000 rai (5,930 acres) of paddy fields in this northeastern province, with six districts declared disaster zones.

Over the past week, persistent downpours have led to a rapid rise in the Mekong River, increasing by 20 to 30 centimetres daily. As of Thursday morning, the river level reached 8.20 metres – nearly one metre higher than three days earlier. Although still 3.8 metres below the critical overflow level of 12 metres, concerns were mounting.

The swelling Mekong River has begun to affect its major tributaries - Nam Kam, Nam Bang, Nam Songkhram and Nam Oun...........

Nakhon Phanom is just up river from Nongkhai.
We are right on the Mekong. Rain and floods ....... almost nothing. The odd heavy shower every couple of days but all short lived.

If you are downriver, you won't need rain. Get to high ground now.

I take your point but the 'forecasters' named Nongkhai last Monday 7th and forecast flash floods, mudslides etc in the coming week. Danger period for the 6th to 12th.
We're already at the 10th and have had virtually nothing.
Maybe we're going to pay for it in the next couple of days.

Today we had sunshine. Now 9pm and like most days - no rain. We probably will have some heavy rain in the early hours but so far it's come to nothing.

We'll see. I'll make sure my virtual umbrella is ready!!

A lot of this is as a direct result of China's dam management.

"there's strong evidence that China's dam management practices significantly impact Mekong River levels downstream, potentially worsening both droughts and floods. Studies from the Stimson Center and other organizations show that China's dams can hold back large amounts of water during the wet season, exacerbating downstream droughts, and then release water suddenly, causing damaging floods."

As I've said in another thread, over the last week, despite only a little rain, pumps are being installed around the town and bars/restaurants/businesses are already implementing sandbag barriers.

It appears to be an annual event and has little to do with the weather locally.

I have just been chatting with a friend who lives in Mae Chan Chiang Rai. He says, it's been raining heavily for some time now and also at the time we were chatting just a few minutes ago. Water is rising rapidly and he is trying to get ready for a longer period of floods. Electricity is also cut off often, which is understandable.

They're already predicting severe drought in 2026. :banghead: Someday I would really like to meet and talk to the squirrels who run this place. :banghead: For decades they have planned and built various systems to secure water during the rainy season for use in the dry season, but it never works it seems, or the money disappears down a big black hole? :banghead:

Wasn't it Gen. Prayut who encouraged everybody to dig big holes to store water when it rained?

Could be part of the story.

Originally it was Rama IX with the "Monkey Cheek" (Kaem Ling) program, and it worked well concerning flooding as well! I don't know if they've continued on with it, or the developers have eaten up all the useable property!
