Re: Night transportation Hua Hin <-> Bangkok

So it looks like train is the only way to do it: Bus: even if I catch the earliest 3AM bus, the chances of me making a 6AM appointment are none. Minibus: the earliest minibus I could find departs at 4:30AM, way too late. The latest around 7PM, way too early. Train: according to the timetable , there...

Re: Night transportation Hua Hin <-> Bangkok

Thanks guys, so there's hope yet! Bigbird, where do I catch these big slow buses (or the suicide ones)? I went to ask around the Hua Hin bus station near soi 96, but couldn't get any helpful answers. Bigboy, did you mean to include a link to a timetable with your message (hopefully for buses and not...

Night transportation Hua Hin <-> Bangkok

I need to be in Bangkok at 6AM next week. I really don't want to spend the night in Bangkok, and I don't mind traveling at night. Ideally, I'd want to take a van/bus at around 2:30-3:00AM. Does anyone know of any options other than taxi/rental car? The latest bus I could find departs at 21:00, which...

Re: Khao Soi in Hua Hin?

There's now Khao Soi in the soi 88 outdoor food court in the evening (straight after the railway, past the 7-11, and to your left). It opened about 3 weeks ago in the new area they have there, and it's quite good!

It's the second or third stall to the right of the row of public sinks they installed.

@Winkie - consider revising your "no MSG" policy. The safety myths around MSG are more of an urban legend than fact. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monosodium_glutamate#Safety for some analysis, as well as plenty of other reputable resources on the web. Quick quote: A controlled, double-...

Re: Not 1 student wore a helmet.

All states allowed slavery at one time. The number of states allowing or disallowing something has very little to do with its moral properties or being "right". It's about priorities. Most states prioritize safety over freedom these days. Personally, I'll take freedom over forced-safety an...

Re: Not 1 student wore a helmet.

Wisconsin and New Hampshire are not backward states, but they both hold personal freedom way above personal safety. It's your choice whether to put on a helmet or a belt. It's your life and you're welcome to risk it. If Thailand (or most cities in Thailand) allows the same thing in practice then mor...

Re: Kanchanaburi border (Phu Nam Ron) for visa runs

I don't quite get it. Why pay 220+2500 instead of renting a car for ~600b and driving yourself? Is this guy providing anything other than the ride? If so, what is it?

Re: Rail crossing upgrades

There's an unofficial crossing *under* the railway around soi 46. Google calls it Thip Niyom Alley and actually shows it as if there's a proper crossing. Drive your motorbike/walk down this alley until you get to the railway, take a left to a narrow dirt trail and keep going on it and you'll soon go...

Re: visa extensions

Yes, you can easily extend by another 30 days at HH immigration office. You need to fill out a simple form and pay 1900 baht, no need for agents.

Not too long ago you could only extend by another 7 days on the tourist visa (the cost was still 1900 baht...), so consider yourself lucky!

Re: Looking for vegetarian restaurant in HH

There's a nice looking vegetarian place in the soi right before Makro heading north (soi 6, I think).

There was also a nice one on soi 88 (fork right after crossing the rails) for the Je festival. They will reopen on Oct 24.

Re: GPS purchase

Sygic does have voice guidance ("commands" seems a tad strong :)), but I don't like its interface. My favorite is Google maps, which is free and has awesome voice guidance, but requires a data connection to calculate routes. It uses surprisingly little data though, so you can get away with...

Consider not buying one at all and using a large screen smartphone instead. See http://huahinforum.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 90#p356055 and below.

Recycling

Are there any bins for recyclable plastic bottles in HH? We go through tons of them here and I'm starting to feel bad throwing them out along with the rest of the trash.
