Mr. K. this is going to be a tad difficult for me aswell, as I also don't frequent the bars. It's purely location, not anti-libation. However, during my fortnightly tripett I'm going to head west(?) to have a beer or two at my favourite watering hole: All In HuaHin OK - I know it's not a bar - but i...

Sorry Simon, but the 'soggy biscuit' thing is a figment of someone's imagination. Parahandy went to Eton - they didn't do it there. And never have done. They did 'fagging' (which has nothing to do with faggots) which involved being a kind of helper/servant to an older student. Polishing his shoes, g...

700 guests? Does your wife/her family really know that many people? That's a lot of 'friends' to have at your wedding. Catering can go to about 200 baht per head (that's 140,000 baht). Sang Som is not that expensive, and the fact that most Thais will dillute it with ice, they're not going to drink t...

K: Believe you me, my eyes are wide open - and I'm pretty open-minded aswell. What I do, however, see here (in the relatively poor village in which I live) is that hard-earned cash is being spent on amulets to bring luck. Little Pui has to leave school at Mattayom 4 because the parents can't ...

I'll just put in my two-penny worth. Parahandy and I have lived here for ten years. Firstly in Bangkok, then four years in Nakhon Pathom, and now (over four years) out in the sticks here. We got burgled in Nakhon Pathom and the police, quite frankly, didn't care. From my correspondence with family i...

From a very local (Thailand) perspective, the increase in the cost of fuel is affecting them hugely. A lot of people who live in the area where we live work for Dole Thailand. They ride their motorcycles to and from the factory, and some of them travel over 20 kms. They earn around 170 baht a day, f...

GLC's penguin was seriously cool and, I suspect, had attitude (the two sort of go hand-in-hand). He's actually in ICU (or somekind of anacronym) at the moment, due to the fact that he always had his headphones on. It affected his sensory organs - his Walkman was playing the Spice Girls non-stop. Don...

I can just imagine it. Police HQ in Berlin. Clerk : 'We have allocated a huge budget for training, and we haven't spent much of it yet, because tents and stuff in the forest don't cost much'. Senior man : 'That's OK. We'll have a trip to Thailand. I think it's quite warm there, and we'll talk for 10...

I've cut a bit from the report for you Dawn, here it is: It is the perfect chance to dust down the leather jacket and unfold the faded jeans. Led Zeppelin, the British rock group who disbanded 27 years ago, are expected to announce that they will reunite later today. The group disbanded 27 years ago...

I've always thought that 'ba mee' was egg noodles - as opposed to rice noodles. 'Sen mee' are glass noodles, you can also have 'sen lek' slightly larger, or 'sen yai' obviously the flat, large noodly bits you have with 'pad see yew' (excuse the transliteration). The best 'ba mee moo daeng' in Bangko...

From what I've seen here, the poorer the person, the more superstitious paraphernalia they waste their (limited) resources on. Check out the motorcycle taxi guys. I'd love to tell them that some piece of expensive dangly thing is not going to save them when they drive around like a maniac. And a pha...

I know exactly what you're talking about - the Thais call it 'moo gataar', and you can easily buy the kit at the wet market in Hua Hin. Just browse around the cookery shops on the outskirts. Failing that, they also sell what you want in the supermarket in the Shopping Mall - right at the back with a...

A student on Monday turned up (bless her cotton socks) limping, and obviously in a bit of pain. One (only one) of her legs had been stung by a jelly fish while she was paddling in the sea at Hua Hin two days previously. She had extremely nasty red blotches on her leg, from the knee down, and her foo...
