Re: longer-term Thai visa for a Cambodian national

They can get married and then she'll be a dependent on his visa. Otherwise the usual - education visa or just have her get a new fresh passport and keep doing the tourist thing.

Re: Labour Ministry: visa and work permit violators threaten Thai lives

As for westerners, the only options now are retire with money, be a teacher, work for a multinational, open your own business or be a brief tourist....otherwise frack off. Student visas still work fine and enforcement is currently weak (though they do have bursts of stricter supervision every now a...

Re: Certificate of residence

I got my residence cert in Hua Hin, and when asked to choose a DLT office, I chose Cha Am. However, I ended up using the DLT in Khon Kaen of all places, and no one there cared that it said Cha Am.

All I needed for my residence cert was a rental contract, passport, and 2 photos.

Re: Thai bank account on a tourist visa... possible?

Definitely depends on the branch and the person you happen to get. I was able to open with Krungsri on a tourist visa only in the 3rd branch I tried. The secret is keep trying different branches until someone says yes.

Re: Buying Fresh Fish

In my experience that location is generally more expensive and has way less traffic than the big 3:

Chat Chai (Soi 70-72) in the morning.
Hua Na (Soi 112-114) in the evening.
Dinosaur (up Soi 56 cross canal road) in the evening.

These flight+hotel+car (when relevant) packages exist online as well. They do make sense sometimes, yeah.

Re: Maldives 2017

Travel agents are a thing of the past. The internet is your travel agent. It's especially easy to research flights and hotels. It also eliminates the travel agent conflict - they have an obvious interest to book you in the flight and hotel that pays them a higher commission. The last time I visited ...

Re: Easier way to do a visa run from Hua Hin ?

Searching the forum would've taken 20 seconds and reveal that the best way to go if you have a valid visa is Phu Nam Ron (Kanchanaburi), and if you don't then Ranong.

Re: Flashing headlights

In many countries the meaning of flashing headlights from oncoming traffic is "beware, cops/speed trap ahead". I often wish Thai people would adopt this behavior.

Re: Eim Yim Restaurant

We gave Eim Yim a try the other day and I must say we were thoroughly disappointed. I'm completely baffled by the praises this place has received here. We ordered 3 basic Thai dishes: 1. Phad siew (40b) - passable. 2. Tom yam kung (90b) - one of the worst I've *ever* had. The soup itself tasted terr...

Re: Currency Transfer Limits

It's probably a default limit set for "your safety". You should be able to call the bank and raise it.

Re: Currency Transfer Limits

Sorry, I meant Currencytransfer (www.currencytransfer.com), not Currencyfair. I found their exchange rates extremely hard to beat. They only accept transfers of 5K or more.

Re: Currency Transfer Limits

There are no limits to a SWIFT transfer. You can transfer 1 million GBP if you can prove the money is legit. 20K won't even raise the question, especially if you're an established customer of the bank. Also consider transferring via a 3rd party service, in order to get a better exchange rate. Look a...

Re: Something for rice lovers to think about

I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned in the article, but different kinds of rice have very different levels of arsenic. You should especially watch out for brown rice, which contains around 80% more arsenic than your average white. Arsenic accumulates mostly in the grain’s outer layer, which is remov...
