Re: Speed Cameras

Since you're receiving it in the mail, this would indicate a dedicated automated camera triggered by either radar or laser. The handheld laser or radar teams would typically have a traffic stop further up the road. I very much doubt the authorities are using MRCD photo radar as that would be quite e...

Re: Things That Wind Me Up Driving In Thailand

Yes, the motorcycle mindset back when I started driving in Bangkok in the early 90's was to speed down the oncoming lane and duck in and straddle the middle line when traffic actually appeared. They still do it now, but to a lesser extent. Then the powers that be changed to taxation rate on pickups,...

Re: How can Thailand curb its appalling road fatality rate?

Too many bike riders adopt the 'look ahead only' stance and won't look left or right with the mindset that others will see them and take appropriate evasive action. You only need to watch the Thai news channels on weekdays between 7:30 to just past 8 am to witness the utter absurdity..

Re: Things That Wind Me Up Driving In Thailand

If you're ever in the Yaowarat area in Bangkok, you'll see similar antics, not with golf clubs, but rolls of fabric tied at right angles to the backs of scooters navigating the narrow sois..

Re: Thailand plans to decriminalize cannabis

The pm lives in Lala land. Ganga had been available practically everywhere from years ago. My first trip up in 1979/80, any hotel bellboy worth his salt could get you some. Magic mushrooms in Samui? No probs. The Thais have been putting ganga in kway teow soup since before I even ventured here. I'd ...

Re: Speed Cameras

Well, BB, have fun. That cheap and cheerful made in China radar detector is basically a superhet set and will pick up everything from your 7-11 door opener to your anti collision and side mirror proximity detection on many newer cars. Also I don't expect it will have any laser detection diodes. The ...

Re: Fitbit or similar worn health smart devices

The original BIP has good battery life because the display is liquid paper. The GTS came later, but since the BIP is still chugging along I have no need for another. Re the 'smart' scales. As long as your weight doesn't fluctuate too much, don't bother. I have one of those inn the house and it confu...

Re: Fitbit or similar worn smart devices

I've been using the Amazfit BIP (original, they're now up to version 3) and for what I paid for it, I'm pretty happy. It's a cheap and cheerful one, but does have built-in GPS and a heart rate monitor with alarm settings. It will also display messages when linked with your phone and has a 3 week bat...

Re: Water tanks

Nereus, you're correct about the poor water pressure, the pump is necessary to pump up to the upper storey, otherwise the wife would be throwing a hissy fit..

Re: Water tanks

Was trying to figure out how that would work too. In both houses in Bangkok, we have a check valve system installed together with the water tank. The pump is an on-demand pump, and will only work if the demand pressure is lower that the mains, and the check valves ensure I'm not pumping back into th...

Re: Speed Cameras

I used to drive quite often on the Asian highway from Bangkok to Khampaeng Phet where they have also introduced the 120 kmph lane. A lot of road work was done to incorporate underpasses, but it is where they have same level uturns in the center divider that the speed reduction had been put in place....

Re: Thailand fuel/pump prices

It's great if you are in an ideal situation to take advantage of the electric charging vs fuel costs, however my travel situation includes a lot of extended interprovincial travel with limited access to accessible charging points and extended range. My typical pitstop takes 10 minutes max and I have...

Re: Which Mobile Phone?

Slightly off topic. These days when shopping for a mobile phone, I find most the the mid range models will have the necessary capability re bandwidth, usable frequencies, battery capacity, GPS capability on more than one system and for me, that 3.5" headphone jack. However, depending on what br...

Re: Thailand fuel/pump prices

Well, benzine 95 is now 48 baht at PTT stations, and almost 1 baht more at the PT stations. I can't help but think the authorities are gouging the premium gasoline users at the expense of trying to pacify the diesel users. Note that very few stations still have this unadulterated benzine, and that t...
