Re: Most practical and least expensive way to transfer large funds to Thailand?

A bit late on parade here, but my two-penneth: There are plenty of specialist currency transfer outfits who give much better terms than a conventional bank. I usually use SAT who's service is excellent, although I'm thinking it's a while since I last tested the market. Essentially, look at the publi...

Re: Quick briefing please

Thanks for that - is there anything for the over 80s - or are they entirely on their own?

Quick briefing please on health insurance

I'm meeting my MP at a social event tomorrow morning and my prime intention is to raise the iniquity of state pensions being frozen for expats. However, I also want to be up to speed on the subject of health insurance for retirees. So a couple of questions: 1) Are there any health insurance schemes ...

Re: New Hua Hin Immigration office at Bluport

I have nothing but praise for the Blueport immigration. + 1 Years ago, when I first started visiting China on biz, the immigration officers were surly and suspicious. Then suddenly (and to my amazement, as I'd not seen them anywhere else at that time) they installed smiley face customer satisfactio...

Re: UK Retirees to face cuts in Pensions

I think the moral argument is well and truly won. Certainly - but think of the reaction of your friends back home when you say you're retiring abroad. Most people tend to come out with lines like 'I wish I could afford that' or 'you lucky b*stard' To win the political argument we have to make the c...

Re: UK Retirees to face cuts in Pensions

Caroline Lucas spoils her own argument in that Guardian piece. She refers to pensioners costing the taxpayer £4300 p.a. but I can't square that number - according to the OBR the average state pension figure for the current year is £7610 - But how much does the NHS spend on pensioners? Here's the sta...

Re: UK Retirees to face cuts in Pensions

So it would seem Yemen is a very popular place for British retirees Where few register deaths it would seem.. I dare say there's probably been the odd Thai wife who's been a little tardy when it comes to wrapping up her late husband's affairs - sometimes, probably, in all innocence - because she ha...

Re: UK Retirees to face cuts in Pensions

Interesting - the very existence of that briefing paper indicates that MPs have quite a large postbag on the subject. Note the line: Essentially, the reason is cost and the desire to focus constrained resources on pensioners living in the UK Anyone corresponding on this subject should point out the ...

Re: UK Retirees to face cuts in Pensions

You'll find all the info within www.gov.uk That's the 'Janet and John' version of the law. Packed with a cocktail of civil service policy decisions, many of which are only loose interpretations of the law and open to legitimate challenge, as well as statute law. From an academic perspective it's a ...

Re: UK Retirees to face cuts in Pensions

No disrespect, but you clearly have no great knowledge of this subject matter, whereas I do, or did, before I retired. Well in that case, could you point me to the relevant statutes or instruments that define this? Official advice on the subject seems very vague and reliant on a self declaration th...

Re: UK Retirees to face cuts in Pensions

A member of this forum (sadly now deceased) moved here without telling the authorities in the UK (DWP for example). It was later discovered that he lived in Thailand and was forced to pay back the overpayments. I think when he died his pension was cut by 50 quid a month. I have a good idea who you'...

Re: UK Retirees to face cuts in Pensions

nowadays there are so many things that you have to declare to various institutes Such as? Re: UK Retirees to face cuts in Pensions

Why does anyone entitled to a state pension ever admit to leaving the UK?

Not hard to find an address to have mail sent to, and the powers-that-be have very little idea where people are..

Re: 'How To' - Requirements for visa extensions etc

Went to Bluport today to try out the visa extension service for the first time today. I've been saying they should cash in on this for years to save people the cost of a visa run and make money at the same time - amazed they've actually done it. As I only had a tourist stamp in my passport, I decide...
