Northern Thai food in HH

Post by Bamboo Grove »

Has anybody found a place where they have northern food? Really miss Nam Phrik Ong and Khao Soi particularly but also kaeng hung le.

I think this is food from the Chiang Mai district and I've never seen it in Hua Hin.
Perhaps you can find it in Tesco?
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

Here Osmo, if you cannot find them yiou can make yourself. Could not find one for the kaeng hung le, but believe it to be sweet&sour chicken.

Thanks Chelsea, Gaeng Hung Le is not sweet and sour, it´s something else. It and Khao Soi can be found in packs and can be self prepared but sometimes it´s just nice to go and sit down and let other do the cooking.

Osmo have a look at this article, it gives a very good description of what Northern Thai food is and also the eating tradition of the food. Is a very good read for anyone wanting to know more about Northern Cuisine.

I would be interested to know if you had one of those type of meals, if so what was it like. I think I would enjoy most of the food, but pass on the Spicy Entrails.

Soi 60 on Petchacasem rd. across from from the kings palace has khao soi noodles. Only place we've found in this town, very good.

Pop round to Mrs Jaime next time we're in town! According to Mrs Jaime Gairng Hung Le is hot (but not sweet) & sour curry made with coconut milk, pork and pak boong. Does that sound like it Osmo?

Hmmm...was sure it is. North side of a nice wood furniture shop. Just before you get to the first , would you say walk over bridge? Or is it a big billboard over Petchasem Rd. going to cha am across from the palace. Doesn't look like much, usual soup pots outside, blue interior I believe with old school wood beam ceilings inside. Will check on that address. Let me know if you find it. :D

Found it. It´s in the corner of soi 50. The Khao Soi was good, had two bowls of them as did a friend of mine. Our Thai friend also enjoyed it. Didn´t try the other things but will definately go there again for some more. It´s opening hours are 8.00-17.00.
I´d still like to find Nam Phrik Ong and Kaeng Hung Leh.

Has anyone been to Baan E-Saan, close to the junction of Petch Road and Soi 6? I'm guessing from the name what the scoff is like, and its been looking busy when we've driven past, but we've not stopped off yet.

Went there again today and besides a bowl of Khao Soi had a bowl of kaeng hung leh as well as I happened to notice it. Both were good and I surely will go back and try the other items they have there as well. Still, no nam phrik ong, so the hunt goes on.
