Atheists Island...

Post by big jimmy »

I was just thinking..as all the wars in the world are caused by religion..why can't we find some philanthropist..with way too much money..who can buy an island and all us atheists..can go there...live in a religious free environment.....and just enjoy life.....no suicide bombers...no pro life/ pro choice people.... no religous zealots from all the world's faiths.....just people who respect each other...respect privacy and public property.....and who just want a peaceful existance....I'd sign up tomorrow.......

No, thanks. Think I'll pass. IMHO, Utopian/idealistic communities often end up just as intolerant as those sections of society they are trying to avoid in the first place. Already shades of that on Atheists' Island, with all the exclusions coming in...

Silly old nostalgic martian me but Hua Hin was Utopia for me 9 years ago but it only lasted 5 years
Utopia doesnt last long the last 4 years has seen a steady decline on the utopia meter im using
But please set up your utopia island and i will let them know and maybe they will follow and i can get another few years of utopia here :D :D

what a bummer

Big Jimmy, I'm by no manner a religous person but I would like to point out that not all religions are out to wage war.
My mother is a staunch upholder of the faith of the Church of England, and it seems to me that this has become a remarkably benign organisation.
Far from enbarking on a crusade of religous jihad; she has managed to curtail her zeal for the faith by participating in the "guess the weight of the cake" competition at the annual vicarage fete, (weather permitting) and standing in the rain opposite the war memorial on Remembrance Sunday. The only other Church events that command a good turn out, are ones that involve homemade jam, preferably on fresh baked scones.
Perhaps if some other religious organisations used this as a model of how to behave, the world would be a much safer place.

Steve G: Agree 100%
I'm neither an atheist nor a bible-basher. People like your mum (and my parents) believe in treating others with respect (and that includes animals). I can't help quoting the Hitchiker's Guide to the galaxy 'And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would to be nice to people for a change...'
Oh, well - just have another beer and watch the BBC news...so depressing.

Steve.......I understand your Mum is a good woman and a good person. In all religions...be they Hindu, Jew, Muslim or christian, the vast majority are good decent people. But when I am a citizen of the so called ' civilised western world ' and the two leaders of the US and Uk invade another country because "God " told them too then all rational thinking has gone out the window..... When a muslim blows himself up to get to" paradise and 50 virgins" then that has no place in my version of how life should be lived...to go to war, as all religions do, in the name of there particular "God "..seems senseless to me....

Utopia is a nice idea big jimmy - but since the day homo sapiens started to multiply, there has been exstremists around - hunting down others that didn't think like them - my guess - this will continue to there only one left, or homo intelligencia takes over the planet - but they will probably also soon start to eliminate each other for various reasons.

Right now it's payback time for the Muslim world. Europe was the mad dog sending several waves of
religious extremists to fight the Muslims in their territory during two hundred years. At the time Muslim
world was the civilized part of the world carrying the torch of Greek and Roman culture and achievement
that Church and Religion had throttled during the Dark Ages. (hence the "Dark Ages"!)

While one does not condone any sort of terrorism, it still is good to find out about the whys and wherefores.

Please always remember on your island, that, if God (or whoever else you choose to believe in) didn't exist, it would be necessary to invent him...

Are Gods only for people who need crutches? Doesn't everybody need a crutch occasionally?

Would your Eutopian idea really work?

I like the thought, though...

P.S. Would Beer Chang be allowed in your Eutopia?
