trouble in town

Post by bill »

my family would like to stay fpr 3 weeks in october. we will be needing 4 large rooms or suites at either the hilton, sofatel or marriot. a good friend recommended hua hin for this vacation. he goes there every year. my problem is this. on his last visit there were reports of a thai gang robbing, assulting and murdering tourist in hua hin. according nothing was being done by local police. in a small resort town like yours this is a problem for tourist. has anything been done? if not there are safer places to go. big bob miller in boston

Two robbers were caught some weeks ago. They had mainly been assaulting bar owners after the closing times. Haven't heard any reports about any problems at the moment. Hua Hin is very safe place and those kind of things don't happen often.

A rather belated response to Bill's post, but hopefully of some use.

Having just returned from Hua Hin, I must say that in Asia - outside of Singapore - it would be hard to find a place that felt safer. I was with my wife and we never even spotted any trouble - of course we could be wrong.

With regard to your choice of hotel, my view - again a personal feeling - was that:

Hilton - completely out of place in centre of HH. Nice hotel, expensive but still feels like a Hilton (could be in any city).

Sofitel - grounds great. If you like Disney in Florida you'll love the artificial feel (personal view again).

Marriott - can't comment.

If you don't mind spending money, look up the Anantara (.com) on the web. Out of town (5 minutes by hotel shuttle or Taxi) and in beautiful gardens with genuinely helpful staff. Suites available. Food and drinks are expensive, but the hotel empties in the evening with most guests opting to eat out. If you crave Western food though, their burgers are highly recommended! :)

Regards

Peter
