There's a new procedure being implemented, perhaps it's already started in this WC?

Basically it's no longer up the referee's discretion how much extra time is awarded as it's been so arbitrary apparently, and of course prone to corruption. I think now it comes from upstairs what time to award based upon their documented stoppage time and tracking records.

Not so - it's still entirely up to the referee how much additional time to allow. What has happened though, is that the referees have been asked to make sure the full amount of time lost for stoppages is added, especially for some specific game events.

It's an IFAB directive so it will be seen everywhere, not just in the WWC.

As it states:

Match officials in the EFL will adopt a new approach to timekeeping in the 2023/24 campaign.

In line with the most recent IFAB guidance, the EFL and PGMOL are committed to ensure a more accurate calculation of additional time alongside an improvement in the amount of time the ball is in play from the start of the new season.

As the game collectively looks to enhance the amount of time the ball is in play in the forthcoming campaign, the exact time lost when certain game events occur will now be added.

The events include:

Goals and subsequent celebrations
Substitutions
Injuries and treatment time (if required)
Penalties (from moment of offence to the whistle for the penalty kick)
Red cards (from moment of offence to when the player leaves the field)

Of course, the EFL doesn't use VAR whereas competitions like the WWC and the Premier League do - and that accounts for another large chunk of added time, usually.

The sad thing for me here is that I wouldn't mind supporting England if not for all of their supporters turning like Tottenham supporters when it's about England.

For England mens it's mostly just wild optimistic support, 'it's coming home' in the hope this blind enthusiasm somehow triggers the football gods to help push us over the line. It's been so long. And we're getting closer...

For the women's, they're the top team in the business. Said a few posts ago, it's theirs to lose. So the support and confidence is warranted. No ego, no delusions... just fully getting behind the England women and what they've achieved.

For Tottenham it's a mix of yearning, sarcasm and delusion. But we'll continue as we are, cheers. X

Now, now, lost, hear this. I did support England in the 70's. Nobody that I knew was talking that England would have been the home of the World Cup trophy. I more or less remember one miserable night in Poland.

Dismissing the difference in physicality for a moment, the women's game is probably running around non-league to (at a push) league two level of skill and tactical nuance. Give or take.

Is reinserting Lauren James into the lineup over Ella Toone the right move. Of course, if they do and they win. Not so much if they do and they lose? This kind of thing is what gives coaches grey hair.
