Euros 2024

Post by Lost »

No comments on last night's game yet? First win in Italy for 66 years. Harry becomes England's all time top scorer. Made hard work of it and should have been 3 up at the break but a good start.

Second half performances against big teams still worrying with Southgate seemingly tactically outsmarted time and time again. But... a win's a win.

Coming home?

I never saw the match, just a few minutes on YouTube this morning - definitely a game of two halves but at least England came out of it on top and as you’ve mentioned Lost, “everybody’s” favourite footballer is now Englands leading goal scorer, with presumably many more to add to his 54 tally before he retires. Kane may not be in the Messi/Ronaldo sphere, but as far as England goes, he’s one of the best we’ve ever had. Everyone will have their own personal favourite player (Bobby Moore and Charlton to name but two), but at least he can be mentioned in the same breath.

I considered a comment about coming home, but just thought it was too obvious, especially after taking the honours in Italy.

Scotland captain Andy Robertson says visitors Cyprus will be no pushovers as the "toughest group in the whole of the Euro qualifiers" starts on Saturday.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64997970
Ex-Newcastle United midfielder Temuri Ketsbaia's team [Cyprus] are bottom seeds.

But Robertson points out the Scots had two narrow 2-1 wins over Cyprus in the last Euro qualifying campaign.
Erm, sorry Andy, but that doesn't show how good Cyprus are, it shows... well...

Harry Kane vs Jimmy Greaves vs Dixie Dean discussion moved here viewtopic.php?f=28&t=41382

I honestly do not see Jimmy Greaves or Dixie Dean having much impact on Euros 2024.

England vs Ukraine match report.

England scored twice. Nothing else happened.

The highlights programme has been cancelled as there was only one highlight.

Oh those of little faith.......... Don't England need to call on all? :duck:

Anywho, Wales did well to get a draw (albeit in injury time) IMHO - Croatia were massive favorites for the game.

I tend to agree. England did a job. Nothing more, nothing less. Saka goal was nice.

6 points out of 6 - what more was needed?

Excellent live VPN feed from Channel 4.

I've just watched the highlights and I'm now wondering why the first goal was given to Kane - he didn't touch the ball. 100% own goal.

I’ve watched it many times and although it’s not 100% conclusive, it looks as though the defender got the main contact and then a slight touch by Kane on the way in.

I’ve not read a single report disputing it as being Kanes goal?

Neither have I. It looked fine to me last night, but on the highlights this morning I could not see any contact. I guess the camera does lie :D

I’ve just watched the Channel 4 live game on replay and whilst it’s still not totally conclusive, it certainly looks as though Kane did get the last touch. I’m not aware that he normally “steals” goals that are not his, so reckon it was legitimate!!

I wouldn't normally watch highlights, but my son has a bit of a cold at the moment, and didn't stay up with me to watch last night. He put the extended highlights on that he found on YouTube this morning. From the angle they showed he didn't get within 6" of the ball. However, as you say, he scores enough goals anyway - no need to steal another one.

I'm off to the lake now, but when I get back I'll try to capture what I saw this morning and post for you to see.

Sigh, it's not the first time folk have tried to take Harry's goals from him.

One more for luck. Not the cleanest of goals by any stretch, but off the shin still counts as his.
