Who's going to be the first to sign up for sub duty?

Looking at the video here, the sea doesn't seem particularly rough.

Very strange markings on the exposed side of the ship. Almost like the plating has ripped away, or the ship has hit something. (around 0.10 on of the video)

Whatever caused it to capsize, it definitely wasn't water going down the exhaust stack! There has been a huge and rapid ingress of water to cause it to heel over like that.

The only other opening above the waterline that should be open is the engine room air intakes. In the previously posted photo of the sister ship, the "louvers" that can be seen below the exhaust stack are the air intakes.

It is always going to be debatable whether the engine failed first, or as a result of the flooding.

I have not had anything to do with navy ships, but on commercial ships the fuel is usually stored in the double bottom tanks, and what is called a "daily service tank", that is mounted well above the height of the engine, feeds the fuel down to the engine by gravity. One of the reasons for having such a tank is to ensure that no matter how much the ship may pitch and roll, the daily service tank ensures that the engine is not starved of fuel. That tank of course, has to be filled up each watch, and that is usually accomplished by pumping fuel from the storage tanks, normally through a centrifuge to clean it, into the service tank. (sometimes called a settling tank)

I'm also of the opinion the Thai Navy life rafts do not really look up to the job, when compared with rafts I've been familiar with. Maybe I've been used to the Rolls Royce of life rafts.

The ship is on the bottom at only 40 meters deep, and they are going to bring it up. Unfortunately I think they'll find some or possibly all of the missing still in there.

As Nereus points out, I think bringing it up might reveal more than they want to, It definitely looks as though panels are missing beneath the regular water line.

I think one of the other sinkings talked about a load of containers floating of another vessel. Could it have been in the same area?

The floating containers were about 35 miles off of Samui per Khaosod. Not close.

I think that video could be a bit misleading, it appears to be from a SAR helicopters camera turret and what you're seeing there is probably a composite image of visual and infrared. What appears to be hull damage could be the heat signature of the engine room through the frames.

Good point. I guess we'll see when they raise her.

PeteC, I think it was you who said they were going to bring her up - where did you read that please?

Here. The thing that's missing from this particular article is that it sits in 40 meters of water, there's another article along with this one, somewhere.

Reading that article, it sort of explains the unusual life rafts i.e. the SAR aircraft dropped them. However, I was closely scrutinising 'stock' photos of the vessel earlier, and I could not find too much evidence of the usual inflatable life rafts, which most ships carry these days. I originally assumed they were coloured grey (camouflaged) after lessons learned from the Falklands War. I now have my doubts. Why would SAR have to drop so many rafts if the ship had its own?
