The Thai RSC numbers for Friday, to be compared to whatever numbers the Government puts out later today. That story and data/chart will be inserted into this post.

I have a suspicion that the Disaster/Mitigation people are reporting injuries where people need to be transported to hospital, whereas RSC is reporting everything from police and/or insurance reports. Deaths are not that far apart. It's only a theory that we'll never solve unless we find out RSC's criteria/method.

Sixty-five people died in traffic accidents on Friday, the third of the “seven dangerous days” around the New Year holiday period, in which road accidents tend to increase, authorities said on Saturday.

So far, accidents are down 19% and deaths are 24.5% lower than in the same period a year ago, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

A total of 555 road accidents were reported on Friday, with 535 people injured and 65 deaths, the department said. It reported 151 deaths and 1,320 injuries from 1,339 road accidents during the first three days of the holiday, with 40 provinces recording no fatalities.

Boontham Lersukheekasem, director-general of the department, said speeding was a factor in 36.4% of the accidents on Friday, followed by drink driving at 34.8%. Motorcycles were involved in 85.4% of the accidents.

Most accidents occurred from 6pm to 3am, while 18.4% of the casualties were between 30 and 39 years old.

Road toll hits 73 on Day 3 of break

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... 3-of-break

Seventy-three people died in 574 road accidents on Saturday, the fourth of the "seven dangerous days" around the New Year period, as authorities urged motorists to comply with traffic rules and take some rest when driving long distances.

There were 574 road accidents reported in the country on Saturday, with 574 people injured and 73 deaths, the Road Safety Directing Centre of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, reported on Sunday.

As a result, a total of 1,915 traffic accidents were reported during the first four days of the holiday (Dec 29 - Jan 1), with 1,894 people injured and 226 deaths and 35 out of 77 provinces recording no fatalities.

So far, accidents are down 18.9% and deaths are 20.4% lower than in the same period a year ago, according to the department.

Nirat Pongsitthithaworn, deputy permanent secretary at the Interior Ministry, said drink-driving was the common cause leading to 37.28% of the accidents on Saturday, followed by speeding at 35.71%. Motorcycles were involved in 89.27%

25.96% of the accidents occurred from 3am to 6am, while 17% of the casualties were between 30 and 39 years old.

A total of 419,239 were inspected at 1,890 traffic checkpoints, with 42,189 officers deployed nationwide. 85,196 people faced legal action for violating traffic rules, including 24,279 who did not wear a crash helmet and 21,815 who drove without a licence.

Kanchanaburi province had the most accidents at 24 and the most injuries with 31 people hurt, while Bangkok reported the most fatalities at six.

Boontham Lersukheekasem, director-general of the department, said many people are expected to return to Bangkok and other main provinces today, which would lead to heavy traffic on main roads.

Officers and volunteers have been deployed to ensure road safety and reduce accidents across the country. Motorists are advised to comply with traffic rules and regulations, respect speed-limits and take enough rest when making long journeys.

Holiday road toll wrap: 333 killed, 2,672 injured

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... 72-injured

A total of 333 people lost their lives and 2,672 were injured in 2,707 road accidents nationwide during the seven deadly days of the New Year holiday, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department director-general Boontham Letsukheekasem said on Wednesday.

Total deaths, injuries and accidents were down considerably on the same holiday period a year ago.

The New Year 2021 figures were 3,333 accidents, 392 deaths and 3,326 injuries.

Mr Boontham attributed the drop to strenuous road safety efforts and the cooperation of motorists.

On Tuesday, the last day of the Dec 29-Jan 4 road safety campaign, there were 209 traffic accidents, with 21 killed and 202 people injured.

Speeding was blamed for 34.45% of accidents on Tuesday, sudden lane switching 25.36% and drink-driving 21.05%.

Of the accidents, 82.04% involved motorcycles and 6.31% pickups. The great majority, 82.78%, occurred on straight roads and 10.53% happened between 6pm and 7pm. The largest single age group of those killed or injured,17.49%, were 40-59 years old.

On Tuesday, Songkhla province reported the most accidents (11) and Nakhon Sawan the most road deaths (3); and, Songkhla also had the highest number of injured (11).

A total of 388,227 vehicles were pulled over for checks and 78,340 drivers charged with traffic offences, including 23,131 motorcyclists for not wearing a crash helmet and 20,023 for not having a licence, Mr Boontham said.

In total, there were 2,707 road accidents during the period Dec 29-Jan 4, with 333 people killed and 2,672 injured.

Chiang Mai was the province with the highest number of accidents (96); Bangkok had the most road deaths (22); and Chiang Mai and Kanchanaburi shared the highest number of accumulated injured (93 each).

There were nine provinces that reported zero road deaths during the seven days: Trang, Pattani, Phangnga, Yala and Satun in the South; Nakhon Nayok and Samut Songkhram in the Central area; and Sukhothai and Phrae in the North.

Mr Boontham said the overall reduction in casualties and accident figures was a step closer to the goal of reducing the death rate from road accidents to 12 per 100,000 population by 2027.

And now the propaganda exercise is over, and they've all given themselves a pat on the back for a job bloody well done, they will revert to RSC numbers for daily reporting. 186 deaths have slipped through the cracks somewhere, together with thousands of accidents.

Personally, I don't think there is a lot of point. I monitored road deaths in Thailand for about 18 months, and the stats at this time of year don't differ to to rest of the year. The only difference is that at this time of year they use a different source, which puts significant doubt on the accuracy of the entire road death reporting process.

It is easier to just understand that Thai roads are dangerous, and fatality numbers are horrendous every day.
