I appreciate what you're saying (particularly as you're someone who's suffering long term effects) but, from what we know of the variant, I don't think restrictions should be brought in for Omicron. Sets a precedent to panic whenever an uncertainty arrives. Get vaxxed, be sensible and, if you're in the vulnerable group, lock yourself down and isolate if need be.

Currently England are the only UK country not to bring in any restrictions. We're showing the Braveheart spirit (edit: actually it didn't end well for Braveheart, did it? Bad example. 🤣🤣🤣) while Dictator Sturgeon is channeling her inner Kim Jong-un.

Authorities have confirmed that Thailand now has 740 confirmed cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant, about 34% of which are community infections.

According to Dr Supakit Sirilak, chief of the Department of Medical Sciences, 489 of the cases were international arrivals while 251 were local transmissions.

He noted, however, that face masks, social distancing and maintaining personal hygiene, such as through regular handwashing, remained effective in protecting against all COVID-19 variants.

The Omicron variant has now been reported in 108 countries worldwide, including all 50 states in the United States, though the Delta variant remains the dominant strain in Thailand.

Omicron wave may have peaked, South Africa says

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-59832843

South Africa has lifted overnight curfew rules, with officials saying the country may have passed the peak of its fourth wave of Covid-19 infections.

A government statement said the Omicron variant, while highly transmissible, had seen lower hospitalisation rates than previous waves.

There had been a marginal increase in the number of deaths, it added.

The variant - first reported by South Africa last month - is spreading fast elsewhere leading to widespread curbs.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a "tsunami" of infections from Delta and Omicron variants that could overwhelm health systems.

But in South Africa, a statement released after a special cabinet meeting said cases and hospital admission rates had dropped in almost all provinces across the country.

For the week ending 25 December 2021, the number of confirmed infections stood at 89,781 - down from 127,753 the week before.

The changes announced include lifting restrictions on movement between midnight and 04:00. Businesses will also be allowed to sell alcohol under normal licensing rules, instead of closing at 23:00.

Overnight curfew rules of varying severities have been in place since a national state of disaster was declared in late March 2020.

The country still has "spare capacity for admission of patients even for routine health services" despite the Omicron wave, officials said.

The public are still being urged to get vaccinated and follow public health protocols, including mandatory mask-wearing.

Gatherings remain capped at 1,000 people indoors and 2,000 outdoors or 50% at venue capacity to allow for social distancing.

The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) will monitor the situation and make adjustments if necessary or if hospital pressure increases, officials said.

South Africa has recorded almost 3.5 million Covid-19 cases and more than 90,000 deaths during the pandemic.

Many countries around the world are battling the Omicron wave while weighing up restrictions:

- Israel has approved a fourth Covid-19 vaccination, the director-general of its health ministry said. The country reported its highest number of cases since September on Thursday

- France has reported more than 200,000 cases for a second day in a row

- In India, a spike in Covid infections has prompted the government to tighten restrictions, including night curfews in all major cities

- Germany has announced it will lift strict travel rules for people arriving from countries hardest hit by Omicron in early January, including the UK

- Portugal has reduced the period of self-isolation for asymptomatic Covid and contact cases from 10 to seven days

A 'strange' symptom to the omicron variant has been added to the list. Night sweats. Doctor Amir Khan said they're the kind of sweats that'll make you change your clothes in the night.

Other common symptoms are muscle aches, fatigue and scratchy throats.

A total of 61 cases of the Omicron variant has been found among Thais and foreigners in Prachuap Khiri Khan, it was announced on Monday Jan 10.

According to Dr. Wara Selawattanakul, Provincial Public Health Doctor, 27 of the cases have been found among foreigners, while 26 originated in people who travelled to the province from elsewhere in Thailand.

Six of the cases are local transmissions within the province and a further 2 cases are still under investigation.

Dr. Wara said most the Omicron cases were found in Hua Hin (54 cases).

The other cases were found in Pranburi (3 cases), Bang Saphan (2 cases), Thap Sakae (1 case), and Mueang Prachuap (1 case). Currently, 11 of those who have tested positive for Omicron have already made a fully recovery.

Health officials said while the data shows that the Omicron variant is not as severe as the Delta variant, it is more contagious.

Therefore, people are urged to closely adhere to public health measures, particularly people who are in the so-called ‘at risk’ groups, such as those aged 60 years and older, those with 7 chronic conditions, and those who are pregnant 12 weeks or more.

Health officials also urged people who had not been vaccinated to get the vaccination as soon as possible.

In addition, all hospitals in the province are in the process of accelerating 3rd dose of vaccine for those who have received 2 doses.

Meanwhile, the provincial governor, Mr. Sathien Charoenruen has also instructed relevant officials to prepare additional beds for COVID-19 patients, as well as ensuring there are enough medical staff, field hospitals, and isolated community centres to treat patients should the province experience a spike in cases.

There are some countries here in Asia that are coming totally unglued concerning this variant. Hong Kong is a good example below, but they have little choice now that the Mainland has taken complete control of the city. I would say presently Thailand is partially unglued, and hopefully they'll turn those incarcerated in field hospitals loose and let them go home to recuperate, and stop sealing off entire villages because of 20-30 cases. It's going to take someone to put their foot down hard to get out of this mode they've been in for the past few years.

'Battlefield mode': Hong Kong hospitals buckle under Omicron wave

https://www.bangkokpost.com/world/22656 ... icron-wave

HONG KONG: Huddled under blankets and thermal shields, dozens of elderly patients shivered on gurneys outside a hospital serving one of Hong Kong's poorest communities -- a grim tableau for the city as its health system buckles under an Omicron-fuelled coronavirus wave.

"We call this the fever zone," a nurse in full-body protective gear told AFP, declining to be named. "Don't get too close."

Hong Kong is in the throes of its worst coronavirus outbreak, and record new daily infections have pushed hospitals in the finance hub to the breaking point.

On Monday, Caritas Medical Centre in Sham Shui Po district started setting up isolation tents outside its facilities -- initially limiting one Covid patient per tent.

But by nightfall Wednesday, entire families were crammed into the tents, while about 50 others languished in the February chill on hospital beds wheeled outside.

"Some of my colleagues say we are now in battlefield mode," said David Chan, an emergency room nurse at Caritas who is also the acting president of Hong Kong's Hospital Authority Employees Alliance.

"We are worried that the patients' conditions will worsen later this week," he told AFP, calling the situation "very undesirable".

One of Chan's big concerns was the forecast for wet weather.

Later that evening, rain began to fall.

Unvaccinated elderly

Like mainland China, Hong Kong has adhered to a zero-Covid strategy, which has largely kept the virus out but left the business hub cut off from the world.

Until the most recent outbreak, all patients were treated in dedicated Covid isolation wards, and close contacts were sent to a quarantine camp.

But the extremely contagious Omicron virus variant has left authorities scrambling and exposed shortcomings in plans to deal with a major outbreak.

On Wednesday, the daily caseload hit a record 4,285 confirmed infections with a further 7,000 preliminary positives in the densely packed city of 7.5 million.

Before the latest wave, Hong Kong had recorded just over 12,000 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

Health experts say the daily case numbers could rise to 28,000 by March.

Especially vulnerable are Hong Kong's vaccine-hesitant elderly.

Despite ample supplies, only 43% of those aged 70-79 and 26% of over-80s opted to get jabbed.

Last week, the government said people with mild cases could isolate at home but by Wednesday, there were still 12,000 people waiting to be hospitalised.

'No plan'

At Caritas, the wave of patients has left staff "exhausted, stressed out and helpless", Chan said.

"It's so painful that we have been working non-stop but we still cannot take care of every patient properly," he told AFP, adding that the current crisis outpaced what they faced at the beginning of the pandemic.

"Back then, we did not know the virus well and we were short of equipment," he said.

"Two years on, we expected the Hospital Authority to have better plans -- but there turned out to be none."

City leader Carrie Lam ruled out a hard, China-style lockdown on Tuesday.

But the following day, Beijing-controlled newspapers carried an order from President Xi Jinping telling Hong Kong authorities to take "all necessary measures" to control the outbreak.

Yet it remains unclear whether Hong Kong could ever make it back to zero Covid cases, given the rapidly increasing number of infections in the territory.

'Sandcastles in a tsunami'

The government has opened temporary Covid clinics and plans to build a makeshift mega-hospital.

It also plans to requisition 3,000 unoccupied public housing apartments and is looking into whether hotels can house some cases.

But whether those measures will come in time remains to be seen.

In the Caritas parking area past the "fever zone", a worried mother cradled her two-year-old -- trying to keep the toddler comfortable as they waited in the 15 degree Celsius chill.

"I kept calling the (government Covid) hotlines but none of them connected," the woman, who provided just her surname Chau, told AFP, adding that her daughter was running a high fever.

When they arrived two hours prior, nurses instructed her to get tested -- which could take hours as she joined some 120 people waiting outside Caritas.

"They have no wards for you, so you have no choice but to go home," Chau said.

Healthcare professionals have long warned that Hong Kong's public hospitals were underfunded and unprepared for a coronavirus surge.

Even during previous flu outbreaks, hospitals had "buckled", said Siddharth Sridhar -- a microbiologist at the University of Hong Kong -- in a tweet Wednesday.

"Now, with a disease that is more transmissible/severe than flu, and requires exposed staff to quarantine, HK's hospitals are sandcastles in a tsunami."

Take a look at this photo. People out on the sidewalk in the cold February weather in HK. :banghead:

This more than baffles me. I've been watching this web page since the early pandemic in 2020 and thought it was reliable (https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/) Now look at the number of cases in China and then read these news:
Shanghai's 25 million residents remain under lockdown.

On Friday, the city - China's financial hub - announced a record 21,000 cases. An official said that out of 130,000 infections during the current outbreak, just one person was considered to be in a "severe condition".
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-61043346

I don't think BBC is lying here as even the South China Morning Post writes:
Coronavirus: Shanghai’s symptomatic cases more than double to 824 as city rewrites records for the seventh day with 21,222 infections
Symptomatic cases rose to 824 on Friday, more than double the 322 cases that showed symptoms a day earlier
Shanghai, the new epicentre of China’s latest coronavirus outbreak, has recorded more than 131,000 cases since the flare-up started on March 1
What's going on?
