BMA on guard with more rain forecast

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... n-forecast

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is preparing to reinforce its flood defences in nine riverside districts.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has forecast heavy rain in 60% of areas in the northern, eastern and central regions.

Meanwhile, the National Water Command Centre has estimated the volume of rain set to accumulate in the upper river and Pa Sak stream may gradually increase water levels in the Chao Phraya Dam during Oct 1-5, which may affect those who live outside of the river's floodwalls.

Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang has ordered the reinforcement of of 80 kilometres of floodwalls along the Chao Phraya River running from Rama VII Bridge to Bang Na.

Piles of sandbags have also been laid as a precaution along low-lying areas in nine districts -- Dusit, Phra Nakhon, Yannawa, Bang Kholaem, Sathon, Bang Phlat, Thon Buri, Klong San and Rat Burana.

The water station in Ayutthaya's Bang Sai district measured the water flow at 3,052 cubic metres per second (m³/s); the amount of water around Bangkok's Pak Khlong Talat flower market remains lower than the 1.15-metre floodwall at present.

Meanwhile, the Chao Phraya River overflowed into Soi Samsen 23 in Dusit district in the capital last night.

District chief Thanin Niamhom said the river's water levels suffered from inflows of sea water and was aggravated by the increase of headwaters last night.

The district had managed to drain much of the excess and was able to protect households in adjacent areas, Mr Thanin said.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said Tropical Depression Dianmu has prevailed across the northeast and central regions, resulting in heavy showers that began last month and continue to cause flash floods and forest runoff in 31 provinces.

The situation needs close monitoring in 81 districts of 17 provinces -- Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Phichit, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Nkhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Suphan Buri, Sing Buri, Ang Thong and Ayutthaya, according to the agency.

In Ayutthaya, a two-metre high dam located behind Wat Chulamanee in tambon Ban Khum of Bang Ban district broke at 6am yesterday morning, resulting in water from the Chao Phraya River submerging the area surrounding the temple.

San Soisaeng, chief of the Ayutthaya Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, said water from Chao Phraya Dam has been discharged at 2,779 m³/s, resulting in excessive water from the Noi River, Phong Pheng and Bang Ban canals flooding 18,812 households in eight districts.

A floodwall is also being constructed around Chedi Sri Suriyothai in Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya district in an attempt to protect the site.

Defence Ministry spokesman Gen Kongcheep Tantravanich said the armed forces have been instructed to assist local residents near the Chao Phraya River and Pa Sak River.

Country's largest lake overflows

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -overflows

NAKHON SAWAN: Bueng Boraphet, the country's largest freshwater lake, has overflowed from the huge volume of runoff generated by Storm Dianmu last week.

Wiwat Prarom, fishery chief of Nakhon Sawan, said on Tuesday the storm ended the drought which had dried out much of the lake. It now held 338.4 million cubic metres of water, way above its normal capacity of 180 million cubic metres.

The lake now covered 187,365 rai, compared with its normal boundary of 132,737 rai.

The level of the lake was continuing to rise because it was receiving water from Phaisali, Nong Bua and Tha Tako districts.

Officials had closed a sluice gate in the Bueng Boraphet Canal to block the flow from the Nan River.

They were also draining water from the lake into the Chao Phraya River to help people living near the lake, Mr Wiwat said.

To give a better idea of the size of that lake, 187,365 Rai = 299,784,000 square meters, 115.75 square miles, 299.78 square kilometers.

River floodwall built up at old temple

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... old-temple

AYUTTHAYA: The flood embankment at 391-year-old Wat Chaiwatthanaram has been raised as the level of the adjacent Chao Phraya River also keeps rising.

Sukanya Baonerd, director of the 3rd Regional Office of the Fine Arts Department, Ayutthaya, said on Tuesday that the 150-metre-long floodwall along the river, protecting the temple in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district, had been built up by 50 centimetres from 2 metres to 2.50m.

As a result, the top of the embankment was now 1.10m above the water in the Chao Phraya.

The Fine Arts Department had also placed sandbags to strengthen the southern wall of the temple.

This wall had collapsed during the severe flooding in 2011. Afterwards, the department built a new 20-centimetre-thick southern wall for the temple.

Residents in capital put on flood alert

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... lood-alert

Communities along the Chao Phraya River were on Tuesday warned to stay on high alert for possible floods from Thursday until Sunday when northern flood run-off is expected to reach Bangkok.

As of Tuesday between 3,050 and 3,150 cubic metres of water per second were estimated to be flowing through Bang Sai district of Ayutthaya province.

That water is now heading for Bangkok which could see water levels in the Chao Phraya River rise by a further 30 centimetres to half a metre when coupled with the impact of a high tide, Bangkok governor Pol Gen Aswin Kwanmuang said.

The water level near the Pak Khlong Talat wholesale flower market in Bangkok was measured at 1.9 metres above the mean sea level early Tuesday morning. The water remains well below Bangkok's flood wall, he said.

Eleven riverfront communities that are home to 239 families in seven districts of Bangkok are strongly advised to closely monitor water levels in the Chao Phraya River.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), meanwhile, is preparing to respond to flood emergencies along the flood wall stretching from Rama VII Bridge to Bang Na district, the governor said.

Sandbags are reinforcing areas where the floodwall is low or where there are gaps with 97 pumping stations ready to begin draining water in case of overflows during a high tide, he said.

The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) and the Office of the National Water Resources Committee (NWRC) are also gearing up to deal with possible flooding in Bangkok, said Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, in his capacity as NWRC chairman.

RID director-general, Praphit Chanma, said the department has heeded National Water Command Centre warnings about the possible impacts of a sudden jump in water levels in several reservoirs in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon and Ranong.

In particular, the Kaeng Krachan reservoir in Phetchaburi and the Pran Buri and Huai Sai Ngam reservoirs in neighbouring Prachuap Khiri Khan are quickly discharging excess water, which threatens to increase flooding in some downstream areas, he said.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said on Tuesday some 286,000 people in 205 districts across 32 provinces have been affected by floods caused by heavy rain since Sept 23. These impacts are still affecting many areas in the Northeast, the North and Central Plains.

The situation has improved in 14 provinces, namely Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Buri Ram, Nakhon Pathom, Yasothon, Surin, Loei, Si Sa Ket, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, Prachin Buri and Kamphaeng Phet, said the department.

The floods have so far claimed eight lives, the department added.

Six months ago, many of these reservoirs were virtually empty or extremely low (our 3 local ones were anyway). Thailand really hasn't got a handle on water management yet - waiting for the "Thailand Drought 2022" thread.

Newspeak

Post by Ratsima »

I think it was a couple of years ago that the Bangkok Governor advised everyone to avoid using the word "flood" (น้ำท่วม) to describe conditions in Bangkok and to instead say "water waiting to drain" (น้ำรอระบาย). That nomenclature has been revised. We should now use "lots of water" (น้ำมาก).

Flood warning for riverside areas

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... side-areas

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has warned people who live outside floodgates near the Chao Phraya River of possible floods due to rising water levels between Saturday and Dec 30.

Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang on Tuesday said the National Water Command Centre and the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) have estimated that the water level of the river will rise by 20cm-40cm due to water overflow from the Ping River.

This may cause floods in 11 riverside communities covering 239 households in seven districts, Pol Gen Aswin said.

In response to the risk, the BMA has reinforced floodgates along the river from Rama VII Bridge to Bang Na district, as well as 14 low-lying areas.

The BMA has likewise checked the readiness of 97 pumping stations near the river to deal with rising amounts of seawater. Spare water pumps, water-pushing boats, sandbags and other related equipment have also been prepared to deal with inundation, Pol Gen Aswin said.

The water station in Ayutthaya's Bang Sai district measured the water flow at 2,923 cubic metres per second (m³/s), while the amount of water around Bangkok's Pak Klong Talat flower market remains lower than the flood wall at 1m, he said.

In a separate event, torrential rains have reportedly caused excessive amounts of water in four large Nakhon Ratchasima dams.

It was reported that surplus water around Mun Bon Dam, one of the province's largest dams, has overflowed its spillway. Residents near the Mun River Basin have been advised to closely monitor the situation including in Khon Buri, Chok Chai, Muang and Chalerm Phrakiat districts.

However, the overflow of water from the Lam Takhong River has inundated households in Muang district -- especially the Mittraphap community in the city municipality area. Houses and roads have been submerged under more than 50cm of water.

The water has also flooded Takong Khao community located behind Mittraphap community by 1m since 1am.

Meanwhile, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency posted a satellite image on its Facebook page, showing how more than 1.58 million rai of farmland in the Northeast has been flooded. A further 222,402 rai is at risk of flooding.

Between Oct 11 and 17, some 1.2 million rai was damaged by flooding in Nakhon Ratchasima. Other affected provinces are Khon Kaen (90,096 rai), Chaiyaphum (61,237 rai), Maha Sarakham (53,248 rai), Roi Et (66,699 rai), Kalasin (28,422 rai), Buri Ram (25,086 rai), and Surin (20,261 rai). Other areas affected, but not as severely, include Yasothon (11,406 rai), Si Sa Ket (7,829 rai), Ubon Ratchathani (7,384 rai) and Amnat Charoen (1,209 rai).

due to rising water levels between Saturday and Dec 30.
I don't think I've ever seen an alert to cover that length of time - more than 2 months.

We drove from Korat to Cha Am yesterday. It took us 90 minutes to drive the 22K from our house through the Nava Nakhon industrial area on Mittraphap. Although the flood water was not deep on the highway, it slowed traffic down to a crawl.

On Sunday I cycled a short way on Hwy 204 (Khon Kaen Bypass). It was dry. On Tuesday it was closed due to flooding from Lam Takhong river.

Many areas in Korat in the floodplain of that river are now under water including large swaths of land behind The Mall, all around Maharat Hospital, etc.

This is very similar to conditions in Korat in 2010 and 2011.
