Thanks Pete, I love this sort of thing. One of the main reasons why English can be so complicated is the conflicting influence of so many linguistic origins - Celtic and perhaps Latin, but Germanic (Angles, Saxons, Scandinavians) and Norman French in particular. It's a fascinating subject and I wish I had the energy (I can't really say I don't have time) to study it properly.

Here's two if interested. First $150.00 per year, second is free. There are more out there as found these with a quick look.

For some unbeknownst reason I was thinking about the origin of the word sofa the other day and because of my half Norwegian ancestry convinced myself that it was derived from the Norwegian word for sleep which is sove which is a load of bollocks according to Google, the word, in fact, derives from the Arabic soffah which is 'a part of the floor raised a foot or two, covered with rich carpets and cushions, and used for sitting upon.

"For some unbeknownst reason"

Since we're on the subject of language, what's wrong with that phrase?

Oh thank you, sateeb, for another opportunity! :lach: :lach:
The correct phrase is: Hear, hear! ... “Hear, hear!” simply means “hear him” ... and is a sign of approval of the previous speaker.
