WASHINGTON: A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the Alaskan peninsula, triggering a tsunami warning for areas within 300km of the epicentre.

The shallow quake hit at 0612 GMT Wednesday about 500 miles southwest of Anchorage, and around 90km south-southeast of the remote settlement of Perryville, the US Geological Survey said.

"Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters ... hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300km of the earthquake epicentre," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

A tsunami warning was in effect for the Alaskan peninsula and south Alaska.

"For other US and Canadian Pacific coasts in North America, the level of tsunami danger is being evaluated."

The quake was felt hundreds of miles away.

"Bed and curtains were going. Felt like a very long quake!" one witness in Homer, Alaska, 400 miles from the epicenter, said on the quake monitoring website msc-csem.org.

Alaska is part of the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.

Alaska was hit by a 9.2-magnitude earthquake in March 1964, the strongest ever recorded in North America. It devastated Anchorage and unleashed a tsunami that slammed the Gulf of Alaska, the US west coast, and Hawaii.

More than 250 people were killed by the quake and the tsunami.

This one is ongoing and it is all over the news, everywhere. I'll only update it further if events get much worse. For more detailed stories and video search "China floods".

China flood alert at highest despite key dam's safety assurance

Estimated damage of $9.2bn and 24m victims hinder COVID recovery

https://asia.nikkei.com/Economy/Natural ... -assurance

SHANGHAI -- Local authorities in central China issued their highest flood alert after the water level of a major river reached nearly 29.7 meters on Monday, well above the danger level of 27.5 meters.

The country's National Meteorological Center forecast heavy rains of between 100 mm and 160 mm from Tuesday to Thursday in Sichuan, Anhui, Hubei and Henan provinces.

Torrential rains have affected nearly 24 million residents across 24 provinces beginning this month, the Ministry of Emergency Management said on Sunday. Authorities estimated direct economic damage at 64.4 billion yuan ($9.2 billion).

Local authorities in the Huaihe River area described the flood control situation on Monday as "grim" after waters reached this year's record of 29.66 meters. Officials warned of more rain to come, sending the flood warning alert to "red" -- the highest in the four-tier system.

The river passes through the central region of Anhui, Henan, Jiangsu and Shandong provinces, separating the northern and southern parts of economically vital east China.

On Monday, local authorities discharged waters at the Huaihe River-linked Wangjiaba Dam. State media reported that part of the Chuhe River's levee in Anhui Province was demolished on Sunday to divert floodwaters.

In a video posted on social media on Monday, flooding in the city of Liuan in Anhui trapped 10,000 residents. Rescuers were seen trying to reach villages on boats.

China's rainy season started on June 1, one week earlier than usual, according to the National Climate Center. Heavy rainfall was concentrated mainly in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the country's longest waterway, resulting in average precipitation of 370 mm through July 9. The level tracked the record in 1961, and was 55 mm higher than in 1998 when thousands were killed and countless properties destroyed.

Chinese officials said this year's tropical rainstorms were a result of massive water vapor from the Bay of Bengal meeting cold air from the north.

The downpours are also testing the Three Gorges Dam. Completed in 2006 despite protests by environmentalists and residents, the water level in the reservoir behind the dam grew by 25% of its total capacity since Saturday.

Officials dismissed accusations that the dam had failed to prevent floods in downstream cities.

"If flooding occurred via heavy rainfall in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the cities surrounding these reaches would have to mainly rely on their own flood drainage facilities," state-owned Three Gorges Corporation was quoted as saying in the Global Times on Monday. "Under such circumstances, the Three Gorges Dam can still make a contribution by retaining and impounding water to ease the pressure on those cities."

Continuous flooding with no sign of a letup will likely slow the country's economic recovery. China posted a better than expected gross domestic product growth of 3.2% in the second quarter, mainly due to industry investment rather than consumer spending

"[The] stimulus-driven demand has not yet handed over to private consumption as the driver of growth and, until it does, China's recovery will remain unbalanced and vulnerable to shocks," S&P Global Ratings said in a report on Tuesday.

About 3bn animals killed, uprooted by Australian bushfires :( :( :(

https://www.bangkokpost.com/world/19588 ... -bushfires

SYDNEY: Nearly three billion animals were killed or displaced by Australia's unprecedented 2019-20 wildfires in "one of the worst wildlife disasters in modern history", according to a report released Tuesday.

The study by scientists from several Australian universities said the wildlife hit included 143 million mammals, 2.46 billion reptiles, 180 million birds and 51 million frogs.

While the report did not say how many animals died because of the fires, the prospects for those that escaped the flames "were probably not great" due to a lack of food, shelter and protection from predators, said Chris Dickman, one of its authors.

The fires ravaged more than 115,000 square kilometres of drought-stricken bushland and forest across Australia in late 2019 and early 2020, killing more than 30 people and destroying thousands of homes.

It was the broadest and most prolonged bushfire season in modern Australian history, with scientists attributing the severity of the crisis to the impacts of climate change.

An earlier study in January estimated the fires had killed a billion animals in the hardest-hit eastern states of New South Wales and Victoria. But the survey released Tuesday was the first to cover fire zones across the continent, said lead scientist Lily van Eeden of the University of Sydney.

Results from the survey were still being processed, with a final report due to be released late next month, but the authors said the number of three billion animals affected was unlikely to change.

"The interim findings are shocking," said Dermot O'Gorman, CEO of the Australian branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature, which commissioned the report.

"It's hard to think of another event anywhere in the world in living memory that has killed or displaced that many animals," he said.

"This ranks as one of the worst wildlife disasters in modern history."

The plight of Australia's popular koalas during the fires garnered international media attention, with thousands of the tree-dwelling marsupials believed to have perished.

But a government report early this year cited 100 other threatened native plant and animal species that had lost more than half their habitat to the blazes, raising the prospect of far greater losses.

Scientists say global warming is lengthening Australia's summers and making them increasingly dangerous, with shorter winters making it more difficult to carry out bushfire prevention work.

The report released Tuesday was drawn up by scientists from the University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, University of Newcastle, Charles Sturt University and conservation group BirdLife Australia.

I've been following that. I feel for my daughter who is stuck in the US.
She's been stuck there since the end of February and just when she could see a light at the end of the tunnel, she was hit with covid over the last couple of days, and now this. She's living outside of Houston towards the Louisiana border. I read earlier that unless it changes, it could be the worst hurricane to hit that area since 1969, 50 years!

It's there right now close to the area you describe. Come dawn things will be more evident but a life threatening storm surge 40 miles inland!? That's something I've never heard of before. :( Where she is though it's going to be just wind and rain.

The eye of the storm HHT is directly on the border between Texas and Louisiana at the moment. About 2 hours until sunrise.

Looks like a helluva storm! I was in Florida once, on the outskirts of a hurricane and, even there, the tops of palm trees were touching the ground and anything not tied securely was gone!!

Hurricane Laura has weakened slightly as it moves northward through Louisiana, but
remains a very dangerous hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 MPH. In
southwestern Louisiana, unsurvivable storm surge, widespread damaging winds, and
flash flooding is currently ongoing and will continue through the morning. Tropical
storm force winds are possible across the extreme eastern portions of our area, mainly
in Polk, Liberty, and eastern San Jacinto counties. Minor coastal flooding continues
across the Bolivar Peninsula and around Galveston Bay. Laura will continue to
move northward through the day today while rapidly weakening.

- The Storm Surge Warning and Tropical Storm Warning have been
cancelled for Chambers, Coastal Galveston, Coastal Harris, and
Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula

- The Tropical Storm Warning has been cancelled for Houston,
Inland Galveston, and Trinity

- The Storm Surge Warning has been cancelled for Brazoria
Islands, Coastal Brazoria, and Southern Liberty

* CURRENT WATCHES AND WARNINGS:

- A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Northern Liberty,
Polk, San Jacinto, and Southern Liberty

* STORM INFORMATION:

- About 120 miles northeast of Galveston TX or about 90 miles
northeast of High Island TX

- 30.5N 93.4W

- Storm Intensity 120 mph

- Movement North or 355 degrees at 15 mph
Looks like it'll blow itself out quite quickly but not before causing a lot of damage.

About 1630 hours Thai time. Even now an hour later and much further north, it still has an eye. About 30 minutes to go till daylight in that area. HHT, that gold coloured splotch southwest of the eye is Houston.

She called last night and despite her condition, she was making sure the animals were as safe as could be. Then she said she's going to find somewhere to hide from it. It's getting towards 6am there so I'm sure I'll hear shortly.

Last night her time. It was this morning she called.

Latest from my daughter. Yesterday her and her hubby made the animals safe then got in the car and drove west, away from the area, so they were safe.
As the storm has passed the farm, they're now on their way back. Don't know whether they've suffered any damage as yet.

That's what she meant when she said they were going to 'hide'.

It was barely a month ago when they were hit by storm Thalia killing 5 people.

Medicanes are quite rare, only a couple per year, but September/October is the time to expect them.
