Hello All,
I got my Thai driving license a few months ago and haven't yet taken to the road and don't really need a car.
My Plan A is just to rent for the few days If want to drive, and I'm told 1,200 bhat rental per day is pretty standard.
Just wondered if there is a market for old but well maintained cars?, used to be called "good runners" in UK.
Car wanted - is a 30k baht feasible?

You’ll be extremely lucky to find anything for 30,000, let alone a “good runner”. For whatever reason, second hand cars here are priced way above their real market value, but that seems to be how it is - I hope you end up proving me wrong!!

A mate of mine bought an old banger for around that price about 10 years ago. It was held together by rust and a piece of string, the windows didn't close, no aircon (obviously), etc. etc.
As for well maintained...

As mentioned above for 30k in Thailand you're likely to get a 20 year old shed that will cost more than 30k in maintenance within the first year you own it. Used cars are ridiculously expensive here. My first car here was a 14 year old Toyota ... and that cost 150k
Rental prices can be as low as 700 baht a day if you take a small car for three days: http://www.huahinmedia.com/huahincarrental.php

Thank you posters, renting definitely seems the better option for occasional driving here.
