I too have never had a problem getting my own bags used in any store, to be honest.

Like the OP, I learnt the hard way to double check sell/use by/BBE dates, especially milk and it's my experience that the stores I use are all guilty of this.

If you really want totally fresh, untreated milk then go to the farm and lay underneath a cow

Shops will rotate so shortest life span will be at the front. Most people know this and grab from the back where the fresh stuff is. Trouble is, with everyone doing this the stuff at the back gets used and the front slips out of date.
