Like most statistics that you read - you could drive a double decker bus through them. Are they really suggesting that the average times somebody gets drunk in the UK is 51 times a year = once a week for every person of drinking age? I can’t believe that Russians aren’t up there but they don’t even feature in the listing so presume they were not included in the survey!! Quite a few of our Thai neighbours appear to be in a perpetual state of drunkenness

It completely contradicts many other stats.
This one for example but there are many more:

Moldova (17.4 liters per capita over 15+ years)
Belarus (17.1)
Lithuania (16.2)
Russia (14.5)
Czech Republic (14.1)
Romania (12.9)

Australia (12.6)

Define 'drunk' (the survey doesn't appear to). I drink something most evenings, but I can't remember the last time I was drunk.

Re: British people get drunk more often than anyone else
There was a discussion on the radio yesterday about this. Define the definition of drunk according to what was said yesterday it could be as little as 2 pints of beer.
The article does not define the amount drunk, my ex sister in law could get drunk on 2 glasses of babycham. Her brother could drink 10 pints of beer and appear to be sober.
How was the survey done?
Waste of time.

Woke up this morning breathing that's a good start to the day.

This was a survey based upon what 123,814 said. Can a person really remember that he/she got drunk 51/39/?? times in the past 12 months? Forget about how to define "drunk", as I would maintain it's a mental impossibility to remember how many times you were drunk over a previous 12 month period. The figures seem to point to most respondents being habitual alcoholics!

Another money making survey which has no weight whatsoever. Their client/media partner list numbers almost 40 and includes publications like The Guardian among others.
Reports are paid for by their clients/media plus donations.
Hardly independent!

they're designing (and selling, I presume) an app to monitor alcohol intake.... they're hardly going to say "well no need to worry in that country, they're well within safe limits"
However, that said, I do think Britain has "ishoos" around alcohol & binge drinking when compared to it's close neighbours across the channel.

I can remember being drunk 2 times in my life. Very unpleasant experiences. Alcoholics not withstanding, I never understood the fascination with being drunk.

It's the times you can't remember that you need to worry about!

Finland is much worse. However, they are getting to grips with it and it's reducing. However, that said, I do think Britain has "ishoos" around alcohol & binge drinking when compared to it's close neighbours across the channel.
