Hua Hin Songkran 2019 events and activities

Post by buksida »

Starting this general Hua Hin Songkran thread to post flyers, events and general goings on in town ... Most of TAT marketing for this area is only in Thai though, but you get the drift.

Cha-Am getting ready for Songkran
The Cha-Am Municipality is now preparing for the biggest Songkran festival ever in the city. The traditional Thai new year celebration, which consists of Buddhist ceremonies and festive activities, will begin throughout Cha-Am on 13 April from 7.30 am. to midnight.

The preparatory meeting for the event took place on 10 March 2011 at 10 am. at a meeting room of the Cha-Am Municipality. Presided over by the Mayor of Cha-Am Mr. Nukul Pornsomboonsiri, it was participated by representatives from local governmental sectors, schools, hotels and community leaders of Cha-Am.

The meeting has resolved to divide the Cha-Am Songkran festival into 2 parts: the morning and the evening sessions. The morning session, starting at 7.30 am., includes alms offering to Buddhist monks, the ‘Rod Nam Dam Hua’ in which the younger sprinkle water on the hands of the elder to ask for blessing and the Buddha image bathing. At noon, there will be a beautiful procession and a big parade of Songkran ladies from the Long Beach Cha-Am. The procession and the parade will move along the Cha-Am beach to the Ruam Chit Road on the southern tip. Once they reach the Cha-Am Local Culture Center on the Ruam Chit Road, there will be the opening of local game competitions and traditional Thai music performances. The morning activities will finish at 4.30 p.m.

Coinciding with the morning session, is the much favored water splashing – the highlight of Songkran that visitors can not miss.

Starting from 7.30 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the Cha-Am Municipality, the evening session boasts colorful fireworks and concerts of famous Thai artists, namely Earn the Star and Ekarat Suvanabhumi, and a comedy show from Thong Pia Super Joke. Cha-Am organizes Songkran celebration every year to give its local people and visitors joy and happiness. The main events of this year aim to foster local Thai intellect, especially the traditional performing art of Petchaburi, apart from promoting tourism in the city. Everyone is welcome to enjoy this big festival that marks the beginning of the new year according to traditional Thai belief, stated the Cha-Am Mayor.

We went out last night (although I've done the 12th several times, this was my first 12th since moving here 7 years ago). We went out as a group and our first stop was King Pone Petch Park. It was quite early but the park was quite busy, and definitely put you in the mood for Songkran. The music was loud, the sprinklers were working overtime, and everybody was wet. This was a fun place to start. Then the music stopped and the water was switched off - it was speech time - I've sat through too many Thai event speeches (they love to hear the sound of their own voices on the sound system) - time to move on, and head to Binthablock.

There was a huge security presence en-route, although when we saw a fist fight break out (little more than handbags), the security forces did not do anything to stop it. It was the usual dickhead who has been living on planet Mars for the last 6 months. Everybody knows that if you go out at Songkran, you get wet. This guy took offence at being shot. He walked back and tipped a huge bucket of water over his assailant. Then the war began. It was basically beating of chests and swinging of handbags. Friends of the shooter sorted it out, but I did wonder why security had bothered turning up.

One disappointment was the ruling that iced water had been banned this year. Like all Thai top level directives, the rule was totally ignored by the Thai nation, and I felt my shoulder blades contract several times - iced water is not nice when you are on the receiving end.

We moved to a couple of bars and had a great view of what was going on, especially when my own private dancer set up directly in front of me - that was probably more of a shock to an old man than the iced water.

When it was time to move to another bar, confusion set in and our group became separated. By this time the streets of Binthablock had become manic, and it would be impossible to re-group. The streets were literally full. You couldn't move. I've been in some pretty busy football crowds, but this was 10x worse. Trying to find the rest of my crew was impossible. I am >6'5" tall, so towered well above the rest of the crowd - my head was an easy target, and I was being shot from 4 sides, and couldn't get out of the way - I was grateful I was wearing splash glasses or else I'd have been in trouble. Once into this human river, I had to go with the flow for over an hour trying to get out again. I was thinking, if anybody should fall, they would be crushed underfoot - this mayhem appeared dangerous to me. There were toddlers, walking between parents legs in this mayhem - how scary must that have been for them?

I eventually got out of the crowd, and concluded there was no point continuing with this madness, so went home early. Tuk Tuks were a waste of space, demanding double fares, so I walked. There were several attacks on the way home. Regular water was fine, but that iced stuff..........................

Anyway, I had a great time until I found myself in the human river. Here are a few clips, knitted together from last night (the human river appears at the end).

Championship Stoke City 3 - 0 Plymouth Argyle

Points 48; Position 20
