Gala Lagoon

Post by Don East Stand »

As I posted in restaurant news, the site which has previously been occupied by Mr Burger 3, and then Oasis, is now open again as, "Gala Lagoon"

It has only been open for a few days, and has undergone which a bit of refurbishment. There has been a general thinning out of the bushes etc. around the pond, and a small stage built in the pond. I guess this is for live music or karaoke, although when we were in, they were just playing some farang background music. Fortunately, it was at a pleasant volume, so it was possible to engage in conversation.

This is clearly no longer a little family business, as I counted at least 10 staff, including the manager, who spoke really good English. The staff were good and attentive, without being in your face, i.e. waiting on you taking a sip of beer, before grabbing the glass and topping it up!

The menu was only a double sided laminated sheet, all in Thai, although the manager did say that they were getting new menus with English in a couple of days. I do not know if they do farang food, as we were wanting Thai food.

The food we ordered was very enjoyable, and reasonable portion size, although I suspect the spiciness had been dumbed down a bit, as we are farang. They did ask how spicy we required, so we said medium to be on the safe side.

It was also cheaper than I expected, although obviously with the menu being in Thai, I was unable to compare individual dishes.

We will most certainly be going back again soon!

We tried it at lunch time today. There was quite an extensive range of Farang food 0n the menu, although it was difficult to find something small enough for my modest appetite - I settled for macaroni cheese.

We were the only diners. My food was fine, but both my wife and daughter-in-law thought their Isaan food excelled. My wife had what looked like a HUGE plate of snails, and said it was only 60 Baht, which seemed incredible value.

The other 2 are already planning their next visit (after dark next time, I hope).

Easiest way to describe it is to come up Soi 6 from Petchkasem and turn left at the traffic lights. It's about 400 yards on your left (set well back from the road).

And I believe that is probably the reason why the last version did not workout. The original Mr. Burger 3 opened over 10 years ago and was one of only a few in that area. Now there are dozens of places in the area. The other thing against it now is access since the Klong road was divided. Coming from town along the Klong road you have to go to the traffic lights and do a U turn. If you live north of it then you have to go back towards town and do another U turn to get back towards home. I hope it works out for them as it is a nice quite spot off the road with plenty of parking.

Mrs BB liked the Isaan food so much, I think she's planning a quick return tonight.

Surprisingly busy tonight - seems very popular with Thais and Farangs alike.

I don't normally take photos of food, but I had to take a photo of Mrs BB's ginormus plate of snails for 60 Baht.

Another Thai restaurant with an expected short lifespan. Went there yesterday for lunch, only to find that they are not open for lunch! Don't know if it was just yesterday, or a normal non-event, but for me that type of thing only happens once, I don't go back.

Their website clearly states it opens at 1600 hrs and it is good food and well priced. Maybe you should have a rethink

A rethink about what exactly???? I wanted to go to a restaurant, not a website!

Gala Lagoon definitely seems to be the best choice in Bor Fai at the moment. Mum's Kitchen is not the same since it moved although Chainut is still very good.
Any other favourites in the area.
