The first and without doubt the saddest posts I'll read today. I've been dreading this ever since you told us Bob's incredible age long ago. No words suffice, just sadness. :(

Being a sad tw@t, I've asked for his ashes so I can take them to his favorite spot....
My sincere condolences. That is caring taking his ashes to his favourte spot. Our dogs ashes are buried just outside our front door. I still speak to him every time I pass by.
On the previous page is a poem I posted 2 years ago, it helped me. Take care.
Woke up this morning breathing that's a good start to the day.

Thanks Pete - truly appreciated. I know you've suffered the same in the past..... It's hard to say the least. I do know he had a good and long life, and that brings some comfort.

Appreciate the kind thoughts

I've read that poem several times today Lindos and sent to the LHG - it helps, so big thanks for that.

I'll wait for the LHG's return and we'll take his ashes to a beach in Wales - he absolutely loved the place... What is it with dogs and sand on their feet??!!

Thanks for the message and thoughts.

Sorry to hear this. Dogs become family (in some cases a more welcome family!) so the loss of one is similar. Just remember all dogs go to heaven.

Now the thought process starts concerning getting a new pup, or just letting it all go. We've done nothing yet to replace the two we lost and not sure we will, although if a hungry pup walks up to our gate, he's in for sure.

Believe me, he was family - and far more welcome than some members!! He truly was my best friend..... Not too sure he or I will go to Heaven though!

Couldn't contemplate another dog (certainly not a "replacement") at the moment. With Bob's age, there was always the inevitable and whilst not a shock, his passing is very upsetting.

If and when another dog is on the cards, I feel it will be a "Rescue Dog" - as long of course if we can provide suitable care....

Seriously guys, it's been a difficult day to say the least and quite frankly impossible to talk to anyone.

So thanks for the messages - truly appreciated.

Did this last month with a six-week-old Retriever we've named "Marlo". It is a LOT of work so be prepared to put in a LOT of hours (at night also), actually being in lockdown is probably the best time to do it.

He chews the shit out of everything, and produces way too much piss for a wee dog!

At 6 weeks it should still be with it's mother so you have to expect the work. Normally a pup should not be taken from his mother for at least 8 weeks, but TIT. Sometimes there is no option. Removed from it's mother early means missing out on some natural learning which is more difficult for a human to carry out. Social, biting, submissiveness, barking training.
As you rightly say, a puppy of that age will require a lot of time and dedication. Good luck with that. Don't give up as the rewards are worthwhile.

Between 6-8 weeks I should have said. Oh he does the social, biting, barking thing well enough without its mum!

Yes, I still remember when we had to have our last dog in the UK put down. I cried like a baby. I think it is worse when you have to give the vet the go ahead. I can certainly relate to your pain.

We waited until moving to Thailand before replacing her. My intention was to get a couple of BIG street dog pups. When we arrived, a friend was about to return to Scotland to live, and he had 2 dogs that needed adopting - a 7 to 8 year old rottweiler and her 4 to 5 year old daughter. Could we help him out? Well, soft touch that I am, how could I refuse?

Both dogs were semi-wild, and certainly very street wise. Thais were terrified of the rottweiler, which I found to be a massive plus. Of course, almost 10 years on, we have 2 very old dogs (in Thailand terms). Our rottweiler has regular check-ups at the vet, and the vet these days always says she has never seen such an old big dog. She says she is amazing.

I actually did some research online about the lifespan of a rottweiler and they tend to live 8 to 12 years, with any older being exceptional. Ours is now 17 to 18 years old, so well past her best before date, but she can still terrify Thais, and the occasional Farang. She has trouble walking these days, but still has her moments when she sees the Golden Retriever from next door. So we know the day we all dread can't be too far away for both dogs.

She is a lovely dog, but if she senses fear, she does capitalise on it.

I am dreading the day I have to add to this thread with notification of her passing. She will definitely be replaced with another rottweiler. Such a beautiful dog.

I'm wondering BB if the fact her daughter is still with her (does she even realize that?) that her maternal instinct to take care of her is helping to extend her life?

I don't expect you or anyone to know, but it's an interesting thought. I'm sure there is the study of canine psychology and someone has delved into all of that.
