World Cup on Thai TV

Post by Guess »

I have been informed by reliable sources that the World Cup will not be shown on the English commentary sports stations on which we normally view English Premiership and UEFA matches. The story is that they will all be shown on Thai TV with a Thai commentary. One local businessman has nmanaged to get a box that receives a commentary in German. Does anybody have any details on the situation. My UBC mag does not get delivered until about the first of the month if at all.

The main questions are:

What channel/s will show the games?
Will the games by transmitted through cables?
If they are on Thai TV via Satelite will there be a English commentary on one of the sound channels.
If some additional sound receiving kit is available wher can be obtained from.

Hi Guess,
If you have broadband available, you can get streamed radio stations. I understand that BBC five live will have full commentary on England matches, but there are many others.

Yes, UBC sports channels (ESPN and Star Sports) DO NOT have the matches.
They will be on Thai TV, think it's 'MCOT CH9' channel and maybe 'CH11', there is rumour that via the UBC remote control you may be able to switch over the Thai - English language, but this is only available on certain programmes and I do not think works on these Thai channels, unless it's done for the World Cup specially ??

Internet radio stream is an idea but they are usually out of step with the TV coverage by a second or so, which can screw things up.

Apparently the large hotels will have English commentary via their statellite systems, but then we want to watch the games in the bars with a bit of an atmosphere.

Bummer! Watching the world cup with Thai only commentry will only be half as enjoyable.
BBC five live will not broadcast these matches internationally, unless they have an agreement with FIFA.
We need to get our Thai friends to garner as much info as possible.

Obviously ESPN wouldn't pay enough...

I have watched both sports and movies on Thai channels through UBC and as Burger says using the UBC remote have successfully switched the language to English. However whether this will be the case for the World Cup is anyones guess, as it will probably depend on the source signal they are using and whether that includes the commentary, and I would have thought if it did it is more likely to be in German than anything else. Of couse the other very irritating thing about watching live football on Thai TV is their insistence on having commercial breaks while the game is going on, normally reducing the picture of the game to a small rectangle in the top right corner. They do try to time them so that it is when the ball has gone out of play but often get it wrong.

 Crisis! - Crash course in Thai language!!!!

OK What is Thai for:

What a goal!

What a save!

That should have been red/yellow!

Was it a penalty?

Are they the full 10 yards?

You've got to score to win games.

He is playing out of his skin!

They can ill-afford to lose him

He left the field under his own power

We don't know the extent of his injuries

They're just exchanging pleasantries

That was a game saving save

His flag went up late

Was it offside?

Anybody had a look a ABC Asia Pacific, as Australia have got into the WC finals, perhaps they will be shown on there.

In Australia, all live matches are on the SBS Channel on free to air TV.

Can anybody pick up I think it is "Sentana" on cable TV. They are an Irish company who were the only ones that we could see the WC Qualifiers on here in Australia.

A few pubs bought the games in on a one off basis and used to charge an entry on the door as they were so popular.

OK all good stuff, I will make further investigations today and check out the streaming from DSL sith TT&T.

If the commentray for some reason is from Andy Gray then we will need a secondary translator.

Guess, you are so correct, the non english commentary is going to be a bonus as you say not only not having to listen to Andy Gray, but also Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson as well.
We will never need the Scots and Irish to tell us we are up there with the best, it has already been proven.

It's indifferent for me is there English commentary or not. I concentrate match and I don't hear commentary (I maybe I tense too much). :thumb:
If you look at match full bar where is excellent atmosphere, do you really hear commentary?

Scottish/Irish Commentry

I guess being an Ausie or an English ex pat Ausie you are Englified to the degree that for every English international for the last 30 repeat 30 years the English or (Non Irish Scots) commentators refer constantely to the glorious win in 66 and you, as a free thinking reasonable person would not find it strange that this becomes a little tedious to say the least.

In the British media right now is a debate about why the Scottish population Don't get behind England in the world cup, I think your last post answers that question unreservidly.

Ps. As a Scot of Irish origin I would rather spend half an hour handcuffed to a Bengal tiger than listen to Andy Gray Commentating

Yeah, Mark Lawrenson's Irish accent is so strong I can barely understand him - almost as strong as Vinnie Jones' Welsh accent.

Thai commentary.... great! Substitute the footballers for Thai standins if you like. Bloody useless game anyway. Causing the quiz to be halted for a month.....tisk tisk.
